Equivalent to Louden Wainwright's Daughter for A son

Postby Maxine370 » Sun Jan 18, 2009 10:00 pm

I'm working on a project for a clinet with a daughter and a son (actually 2 sons but the second son isn't even born yet in the footage I'm working with). Anyway, I've used may great songs for the footage that focused on her like Daughter- Loudon wainwright and Father and Daighter -Paul Simon. I'd really like to focus on the boy a bit but I'm struggling to find the equivalent song for a son.

Any ideas.

It's funny, Beth, I was Googling this topic for inspiration -- and it sure taught me a lot about the difference between a father's relationship with a daughter and a father's relationship with a son!

This discussion will show you what I mean:

Songs about fathers and daughters are always very touching.

Songs about fathers and sons are always about some sort of conflict. Cat's in the Cradle. A Boy Named Sue. Cat Stevens' beautiful but heartbreaking Father and Son song.

About the only exception is Bobby Goldsboro's "That's My Boy," a song many people find to be the equivalent of eating a big candy jawbreaker right after dental surgery.

There's a song by Laurie Berkner called "Smile" that's a verse for a boy and one for a girl. Not exactly what you are looking for, but I thought of it when I read your post.

I do believe the actual name of the song is 'Watching Scotty Grow', I love that song. Have you ever heard Bobby Goldsboro's song 'Honey', that will bring tears to your eyes.

I see what you mean about Watching Scotty grow. Sentiment works but not the melody.

Smile may work - thanks Jennifer. checking out the rest...

I've also considered Bruce's cover of Pony Boy, Elizabeth Mitchell's of the same. Not quite to a son but a lullaby for a boy.
Also Mother's Natures Son (by Beatles but probably use another artist's cover).

Though it was written about a "girlfriend," I don't think that there's anything in the lyrics, that would preclude it being used for father - daughter,

"My Girl," The Temptations. I'll go look at the full lyrics, just to make sure I'm not missing anything.
