Background Noise

Postby jimfallis04 » Sat Nov 01, 2008 2:38 pm

Hi All:

I have some video footage of friends wishing the Bride and Groom all the best as they start their new lives together. My problem, is that there is a lot of background noise. What is the best way to filter out the background noise and enhance the actual speaking?

Thank you and have a great day!

Running the audio through the Dynamics effects might help.
Problem with lots of noise is that it usually covers too many frequencies.
There is a notch filter and denoiser that may help, best idea is to try them all and try all of the settings until you find something that helps.
You can also run the audio through Audacity, it has some additional filters that work very well.

Jim, what kind of background noise are we dealing with? Conversations, music, wind, car motor, etc.? It might make a difference as to how to possibly eliminate it.

As Bob is implying, certain background noises can be reduced pretty effectively, other background noises can be very devil to remove.

Generally speaking (and using the advice offered by Chuck) if you can obtain a clear sample of the noise from the soundtrack then you should have a measure of success in at least reducing it (the background noise).

Hi All:

Thank you for your responses.

The reception was held in a Ski Chalet. Open concept, hard surfaces everywhere. The background noise I want to reduce is the general sound of background music and people talking so I can focus in on the well wishes people were making for the Bride and Groom.

Thank you for all your help.

Jim, that is going to be difficult as (cited above) that type of noise is fairly wide spectrum and random. Looks like it's time for an expert on this, which I am not!

Try the Notch Filter and/or the Denoiser.
There aren't any settings that I can give you because every piece of audio is different.
You just have to try them out and hear if they make a difference.
This is why audio guys get big bucks, lots of this kind of stuff can take lots of time ;)
