Canon HV40 not recognized by PE7 and HDV Split
HDV Split suddenly doesn’t recognize my Canon HV40 when I try to download an HDV tape. I’ve been successfully downloading HDV footage with HDV Split for more than two years with this camera. I had downloaded two HDV video tapes just about a month ago. (I tried to download the HDV tape with PE7 but it too says that it can’t detect an HDV camera).
Aside from working on some projects whose footage was already in my computer, the only video work I’ve done in the past several weeks has been to download about 80 DV tapes for my son to an external hard drive using the Scenalyzer Live Capture Program. I used my old JVC GR-DV3000 as the deck for that project. I have ten more to go, and that download project is working well. I’m downloading yet another of those DV tapes as I type. The firewire is working fine.
The HV40 had been set to automatically output either DV or HDV footage. I tried setting it to export HDV only, but that didn’t enable it to be detected by HDV split or PE7. I don’t know what to do next.

This is another one of those problems related to Windows 7 64-bit drivers.
Try this: 1- Click the Start Button, type devmgmt.msc in the “Start Search” box and press Enter. 2- Expand the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" node in the device tree on the right hand pane 3- Right click the host controller node select "Update driver software ..." 4- Select "Browse my computer for driver software" 5- Select "let me pick from a list of device driver on my computer ..." and Check the box before “Show compatible hardware”. 6. Choose the second option---1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy), and click next to update the driver.

Steve,
Thanks for the very quick reply. I followed your instructions. The computer updated the driver and had me reboot. The update made no difference. Both HDV Split and PE7 continue not to recognize the Canon HV 40. I tried doing everything twice.

Both programs failing to recognize the camcorder indicates that your problem is more likely bigger than mere software.
Can you confirm that the computer is recognizing the FireWire connection to the camcorder? Your problem could be a bad cable, bad FireWire card or even something broken in the camcorder.
Have you confirmed that the camcorder is set up for HDV output and not set to DV Lock?
Have you tried the camcorder on another computer to see if this issue is unique to your Windows 7 machine?

Steve,
I'm glad you're always handy with a list of likely cures, many of which are painfully obvious. The HV 40 was set to DV Lock. A poltergeist must have done it. I don't use that camera for DV work at all. In any case, it's functioning again. Many thanks.
