GE DV1 1080p HD Digital Video Camera

Postby Chuck Engels » Thu Mar 24, 2011 1:51 pm

For testing purposes, and also to have a second HD camcorder, I am picking up this today
http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0352241

After reading reviews and looking at test footage this seems like a very nice camera for $100.

I'll be sure to post a sample and a bit of a review next week.

I'm most interested in how well the video video loads into Premiere Elements -- if at all. (I'm guessing it's some non-standard form of MP4.)

It's AVCHD H.264 should be no problem at all but I did get it for testing :)

Hi Chuck, I went with the PlaySport after some feedback from the guys on this forum. Nice little camcorder, as with all of these small camcorders "shake" is the major problem, however Mercalli cleans it up a treat. I haven't tried it underwater yet.... a little scared to tell the truth. 8-[

Wow, I don't remember that thread Paul, did you look at the GE DV1 at all?

Ahh, I remember now but that was a long time ago :)

Got the battery charged on the DV1 and shot 30 seconds of video.
Plugged the USB cable into the camera and my computer, copied the video file from the 32GB SD card to my desktop.
Then opened a AVCHD Full HD 1080p 30 project and imported the video, worked perfectly !!
I have to get used to using this camera and will try the other settings too, but so far so good. Will get some good comparison stuff this weekend with my two camcorders. Will be nice to see how the quality compares with the Canon HV40.

Wanted to do some testing today but it is overcast and it's going to rain, looks like storms all weekend :(

Sounds like a great opportunity to do some low-light tests, Chuck!

I've already seen how the HV40 works in low light and don't expect this camera to be any better.
For a good test I need some sunshine, I always like to hear the good news first :)

Here is a short 1 minute sample.
The video was recorded in 1080p and then saved as a 720p WMV. All editing and export done with Premiere Elements 9.

The file is 38mb so it may take a few minutes to download. I will do some comparisons with the HV40 as soon as the weather clears up, hopefully by the weekend :)

Premiere Elements had no problem with the file however rendering the AVCHD video did take a long time.
20 minutes for 1minute of video on my Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz laptop.

EDIT: I thought the export was 720p but I see interlacing, maybe it was 720i :-k

Hi Chuck, some good footage that demonstrates the capabilities of the GE DV1. Do you see any "jello" (rolling shutter) effects when panning or with movement when filming 1080p? It doesn't look like it from your sample clip, that is one thing that disappoints me with the PlaySport. I need to run virtually every 1080p shot through Mercalli to get rid of it.

There is some of the rolling shutter when panning, I panned very slow in the sample video.
With the video work that I do at church I have learned to have a very steady hand as well :)
But overall it isn't too bad. This is not a camcorder for a lot of action but for what I do it should produce some really good B roll footage and that was my goal along with using it to test Version 10.
