Need Help, Please

Postby ridon127 » Wed Jul 11, 2007 3:39 pm

I just got a new camcorder and I am having trouble figuring out how to connect everything. The instruction manuels just don't cut it for me. I have a Canon Elura 100. I want hook it to mu VCR so that I can record my old tapes on my computer.. I have done what that book says but something isn't clicking here.. I hate to ask but I have got to get this footage I have converted to get my DVD done. Thanks for the help.

Donna,

I also have a Canon Elura 100. The instructions are on page 88 in the manual. I too at the beginning had a problem getting my video from my VCR tapes. First make sure you get the Canon set to the EXCUTE mode. I have a VCR recorder that has front mounted Audio & Video jacks and for some reason it won't work from those front mounted jacks. What I had to do was hook up the cables from the rear of the VCR recorder and it works from there. So I would try that first. Help this helps you out. When its working right you will see the video in you Canon LCD screen.

Ric,
Thanks. That worked. Now another question. Is there a way to record directly from my camcorder to my computer thru a USB port? I have my VCR connected to my camcorder and wanted to transfer the tapes that way. I don't have a DV cable. What would be the best way?
Thanks for your help

Donna,

Once I have the video on my Canon camcorder I connect it directly to my computer via a firewire cable. That cable is called a DV Cable look at page 86 for more info. I'm not sure that the USB cable connection plays nice with PE3. Someone else here may know better then me. Hope this helps if you need any more information please let me know.

You need to have Firewire. PREl2 (or 3) does not support USB transfer.

You should be able to get a Firewire add-in card, or upgrade your sound card to a model that includes a Firewire port.

Donna,

I don't know the spec's and what your computer has, but you will need to find out if your computer has a firewire port. If you give us the make and model number of your computer it can be looked up on the internet. Let me know what you find.

Most computers don't come with a Firewire port, I hope yours did. If not, it is a very easy process to add one and I am sure you can do it :)

Go to Start / Control Panel / Network Connections. If you see a 1394 connection, you have Firewire.

Here is a picture of what the Firewire port should look like
http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/PapaJohn/14/Windows_XP_SP2_Movie_Maker_2-1_files/image006.jpg

The Firewire port is on the left, USB in the middle and I don't know what on the right side :???:

So do I have to record my analog tapes to my camcorder, then put them on my computer via the firewire? Is there another or a better way to do it?
Thanks

It's not only the best way to do it, Donna, it's pretty much the ONLY way, if you want to be sure everything is going to go smoothly.
