From Camcorderinfo.com:
November 7, 2007- A recent study by the UK-based research firm Understanding and Solutions shows an increase in High Definition camcorder sales so far in 2007. In the U.S., HD camcorders comprise only 10% of total unit demand, but that translates to over 25% in value due to the higher costs of HD.
The average price of an HD camcorder is $1300, but researchers estimate that average will drop to more than half that value by 2011. Understanding and Solutions Market Analyst David Watkins states that HD camcorders are “expected to account for 11% of all camcorder shipments in Europe, Japan & U.S. by the end of 2007.
In terms of value this translates as 23%.” 75% of the HD camcorder market was dominated by tape (HDV) in 2006, and HDV continues to be the HD format of choice in 2007. According to the report, the success of HDV is conjured by its superior capture quality, lower price points, and cheap, easily swappable media.
On the coattails of HDV are HDD and SS (Solid State) camcorders, which have experienced an 81% in shipment growth over the past 12 months. HD optical formats, such as DVD camcorders are not forecasted to impact the market to the degree of HDV, HDD, and SS.
As HD camcorders increase in popularity, the need for home HD televisions and displays is on the rise as well. By the end of 2007, the report estimates that 34% of American homes will feature ‘HD Ready’ displays, and that figure will most likely jump to a staggering 90% by 2011.
