Videocams and photocams

Postby Francesco Carzedda » Sun Aug 11, 2013 3:36 pm

Good evening to everyone :-)
Some good contributors on YouTube and Vimeo say that the future of video capturing are photocams, beeing standard for tools like dollies and sliders, efficient and upgradable with lenses, even for timelapses.
Canon eos 600d, for example, seems to be one among the favourites of filmmakers.
What do you think?
Nice evening

That does seem to be the case, for many videomakers. Although the Black Magic cam is really turning heads!

Both are a little pricey for a hobbyist like me. I'm perfectly happy for now with my AVCHD camcorder.

Steve, as a super-hobbist (I shot with my Panasonic sdc-hd 40, not to be left for now) I was comforted by the news.
Canon 600d now costs less than 500,00 Euros ($ 650,00 plus Euros 200,00 for a good lens) and has both the advantages of a good photocam and a nearly professional videocam.

Blackmagic camera is more expensive but doesn't provide essential skills (12 bit output instead of 8 bit raw file, non relevant even for a high level non professional filmmaker):

I hope prices will decrease (I have to finish paying my car for now :-) ) .

(Since Europeans use commas in their numbers the way we Americans use periods, 500,00 Euros means 500 Euros -- or $650, by the way.)

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of the Canon 5D, the industry standard for DSLR video, which retails for $2000-4000, which is a bit pricey for most hobbyists. But it does shoot video that rivals most pro camcorders -- with the added advantage of interchangeable lenses!

I don't know much about the Canon 600D, Francesco. But it is a very nice looking camera that should also give you excellent resuts -- and should interface nicely with virtually any video editing program.

Thanks for the right syntax, Steve, honest!
Numbers as well must be expressed the right way :-)
But ... heyheyhey :-) ... "we Americans", "Europeans"... of course, but I'm pleased your surname sounds familiar :-)
(I am a proud Italian, in spite of our administration).

What do you think about this comparison between Canon 5d and Canon 600d?
http://versus.com/it/canon-eos-600d-vs- ... d-mark-iii

I am concentrated on the price...
What can really make 5d preferable?

Si, sonno Italiano. Ma io parlo solamente on po'. (Did I get that right?)

It appears that the 5D has some more sophisticated features than the 600D. The 600D is clearly for consumers, while the 5D is more of a professional camera.

For instance, the 600D has a pretty simple auto-focus system, which will take great snapshots. But the 5D has a focus system that using "52 more focus points". The 5D also has an external microphone input and many more features that can be set manually, which can give you a much cleaner, sharper video or still photo.

But whether or not that's worth $2000 more depends on how you work. If you're happy with the quality of your 600D, then that's all that really matters!

I'm, for instance, thrilled with the high definition video on a Canon AVCHD camcorder I picked up for under $200. It's not a professional camcorder by any means, but I'm very happy with the video that it shoots!

Quasi giusto

Postby Francesco Carzedda » Mon Aug 12, 2013 11:12 am

Steve,

è quasi giusto :-)
"Sono Italiano" is right, "Ma io *lo* parlo solamente *un* po'' " (lo=it).
Ooooh, feel at home :-)

Some results with Canon Eos 600d are astonishing, this is fantastic for me:

I think Peru was poking fun at Steve. :-D Very good English Francesco!

To add what Steve said, the 5D is a full frame camera vs the 600D which is cropped sensor. I would get the 650D (T4i) before the 600D (T3i) because the 650D has a touch screen. It is easier to get to the menus quickly. I have the T4i and am very happy with it. The 700D (T5i) is virtually the same camera as the T4i.

Thanks, Cheryl :-) !
I was reading about the disadvantages of cropped sensor, but I would be very pleased if you could sum up.
Full frame seems to be far better, but prices increase from Euros 500,00 ($ 665) to Euros 2.500,00 ($ 3.320) at least.
How much is it worth investing (in my case: dreaming on spending) Euro 2.000,00?
First pro is that you can save on lenses' price and that you can use a wider range of lenses on a full-frame camera.
But I don't know anymore.
Thanks, Francesco

Here is a comparison of the 600D vs 5D:

Comparison of the 600D vs 650D:

http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-600d- ... n-EOS-650D

A very good video explaining crop vs full frame:

It all comes down to your budget & shooting needs. I don't have any experience with full frame. With the T4i and others in that line the crop factor is 1.6x. For example the 40mm lens would be about 64mm on a full frame.
