Camcorder keeps pausing when playing tapes

Postby chooks » Tue Jun 26, 2012 7:19 pm

* I have a canon Legria HV 40 HDV camcorder that I recorded footage of at a recent event.
* When playing one tape in particular to capture the content on my computer, it keeps pausing and wont play smoothly, either going to blue screen, or, jumping forward-pausing-jumping forward etc
* I have used a digital video head cleaner tape, but hasn't fixed the problem
* The only other camera I have at hand is the Panasonic NV-Gs300 which can't play the tapes due to unrecognised format

It really sounds to me like the original recording is bad. Possibly a bad tape. Was the tape new or reused? If other tapes play without issue then I think you have the answer to your question. If the signal never got recorded correctly to begin with there's nothing you can do. If it's not there, it's not there.

bummer...
* The tapes were new fujifilm mini DV (DVM80)
* I did occidentally dropped the camcorder while recording (but this was after this particular tape was made), and it said something like "head protection mode", so turned it off and back on which seemed to work again.
* I filmed about 10 tapes in total. The camcorder was playing up playing even old tapes I had, so I thought the heads might have been damaged, but the next day I tried again and seemed to magically work again (although does tend to playup on the last few minutes of the tapes). But one tape in particular keeps giving me trouble, the data seems to be there because when I fast forward the picture looks okay, but playing it keeps stuttering and goes to blue screen intermittently.

Do you think the head might be damaged and needs repairing?

The drop has most likely knocked the heads out of alignment. I think it's time to have it checked out by an authorized Canon service center.
