HV40 cine mode or no cine mode

Postby hpharley90 » Sat Jan 28, 2012 8:24 pm

Since I got my camera 2 years ago I have been using the cine mode setting exclusively.
I probably read it in a post here that it was the best setting.I think it was Ken Jarsted.
Anyway just recently I tried it for the first time without cine mode and like the results better that I see in video editor.I even recorded a second tape I like result so much.
The cine mode in my opinion gives the video a soft touch where without gives more detail which I like better.
Watching video with Splash Lite was very good also.
Till I burn a disc I won't know for sure if I like without cine mode better. :-D
Thanks
Richard

My Panny is SD, with the option for either 4:3 or 16:9. In 16:9 I also have the option for a Cine mode. I've tried both and prefer the results without it. Colors tend to be muted and, as you said, softer. Some camcorders will oversaturate, but the Panny does fine in its normal mode, so that's what I use.

I also tried the Cine mode on my HV40. Didn't like it as well. Guess it depends on the effect you're looking for. I want sharp, clear video.

I use Cine Mode all the time. I find it performs way better in low light situations and I don't see were it softens the video, but that might be due to my declining eye sight :-8
In general, I would say use what you like the best, there is no right or wrong. It all comes down to personal taste.

Thanks Jayell. When I was posting I couldn't think of the word I wanted to say. #-o
Sharp was the word.
Thanks

I'm still trying to find what I like. I'm liking the sharpness.
There are still so many settings on camera I want to try out.
Even manual shutter settings in low light to see how it works as to what I use now.I use automatic everything now.
This was a big move for me to try no Cine Mode.
Thanks
Richard

When you get around to trying manual white balance control for indoor work you're going to be very pleasantly surprised. You'll never want to go back to auto. :)

Hi. I haven't posted here for a long time. I still use the HV-20. I found that the non-Cine modes give shimmering edge artifacts on outdoor foliage. Cine Mode prevents over saturation and out-of-bounds contrast extremes - you can always bump the color and contrast when editing. The low light performance, IMO, is outstanding - as long as you don't brighten up the blacks in post. Then, the video noise is revealed. But, even then, the noise is smooth and fine grained - quite tolerable compared to analog video noise.

A bonus, revealed after a long search, is that HDV downconverts HD to DVD resolution with fewer artifacts than any of the newer storage formats. There are editing tools that get around that but you will spend extra bucks to do so.

Hi again, Chuck. I think this last year we had less drama here, weather wise, than y'all. We are doing well. Just not doing as much video. Blessings!
