Distant radio station

Postby cdeemer » Mon Sep 13, 2010 7:13 pm

I have audio I want to sound as if it's coming from a distant radio station that doesn't quite tune in, yet is close enough to understand -- the way I used to listen to early rock and roll in the 1950s ha ha. Anybody suggest settings to get this effect? Thanks!

The first thing I'd do is try getting a clip of just plain background noise. Put it on a separate audio track and adjust the volumes of the two audio tracks relative to each other until you get the sound you need. Here's a site that has three flavors - white, pink, and brown:

Don't know how this will work. It just seems like it might be something to try.

Another thing you could do is to filter the audio with a high pass and a low pass filter. Back in the '50s and before VHF you would hav been listening to Medium Wave transmissions and so the audio would have been cut off at above about 8KHz or there abouts. Kit N would probably be able to give you Chapter and Verse on this sort of thing (If he is the same Kit N that roamed around Breedon Hill). You could create the same effect for a telephone call audio.
I don't know how I woud add a noise signal to give the distant background.
Good luck,
Gerry

sounddogs.com not only has dozens of files of radio static but has files classified by BRAND OF RADIO. Amazing.
