I am trying to use Audacity 1.2.6. for the first time. I want to edit a 20.9 MB wav (generated by PRE 7 File>Export>Audio) but I can’t get it to open in Audacity.
When I open Audacity and click Project > Import Audio, the select file box pops up. When I click on a file to import the wav I immediately get the error message “audacity.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”
The signature error says: AppName: audacity.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512 Offset: 0001aa63
I have uninstalled (via Control Panel) and reinstalled the program. Redownloaded and reinstalled a 3rd time. (All V 1.2.6) I went back to the Audacity web site and debated whether or not to download and V 1.3.7. I decided against it because it says “Stable: 1.2 - for all users” and “Beta: 1.3 - for advanced users”
Any suggestions?

Looks like the same problen as http://muvipix.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1201,for some reason Audacity doesn't like wav files from PRE4 (and maybe 7 too) My work around is to open the wav file with another wav editor, save it, and the Audacity will open the file.

Cinde, You don't want to import the file, you want to Open it. File/Open and browse for the WAV file, that's it. You are trying to make it harder than it really is

Thanks rfjg, I did open the wav file in another editor (Roxio Sound Editor), saved it, then opened it with audacity... so far so good. Chuck, Guess I forgot to say that I tried "Open" first, and then tried "Import Audio" after Open crashed. When I tried rfjg's solution... I tried both ways, Open as well as Import Audio. Both worked. Thanks y'all! Now all I have to do is learn to use Audacity!

I have a wav file I export from PE4, it crashes Audacity (1.2.6 or current beta) in one of two ways. 1) The file opens, but crashes when you try to play. 2) crashes while trying to open file. If I load this file into another wav editor, and save (with or without changes) then Audacity works with the file, no issues. How can I attach it to this post so that maybe Bob or Chuck, could try to open this file with Audacity on your systems? Thanks Uploaded to http://muvipix.com/cpg/albums/userpics/10525/FlowMeter-err.wav

Well you are right, and so are me and Bob Premiere Elements 4, my least favorite of all Premiere Elements versions, does produce a WAV file that crashes Audacity on my machine as well. Version 3 produces a perfectly fine WAV file that Audacity has no problems with I almost always use version 3, but have been starting to use version 7 a little more all the time. I don't have version 7 on this machine so maybe someone could test it. Could just be a problem with version 4, that is what I am assuming. One thing I did notice; the version 4 export was 26 mb while the version 3 export was only 5.5mb, the exact same audio clip in both version

Correction, I exported more audio from v4 than I thought. When I exported the clip again it was 5421k but the clip from version 3 is 5431k, still a difference but not nearly as big.

OK, I downloaded the FlowMeter-err.wav file and it opened in Audacity 1.2.6 with no errors or problems.
I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit. That may have a bearing on this.

I'm running XP pro SP3, I have Vista machine at home, I'll try the file on that machine. Also, When the file is uploaded to the Gallery, does it do any processing on the file? maybe I sould send as .zip.

We don't do anything to any of the uploaded files, data, video, or anything else. No compression, no conversions, nothing at all
