How do I achieve deep (cinema style) vocals in naration

Postby John Walker » Sun Nov 01, 2015 10:32 am

Many cinema ads etc have a lovely deep velvety bass to male vocals. It's more than just 'turning the bass up', there is a very specific sound to it.
I appreciate that cinema sound systems have some impressive 'woofers' but the sound is still there on my home system.

Any suggestions on how this sound can be achieved?

Hi John,

Welcome to Muvipix :wcm:

A good while back I came across a video on YouTube by Jeff Sengstack in which he showed the very sort of thing you're talking about. This link is for "Jeff Sengstack" and "audio".

I believe he was using the Adobe program 'Audition' in the one I remember, but I expect the principles would be similar to other programs.

good luck,

I think that for most of it you need to be gifted with that kind of voice naturally. If you don't have that kind of voice, you can enhance it by using a pitch shift that electronically lowers your voice. This is pretty tricky in that you want to lower the pitch only so it sounds natural. You need to experiment to see what you like. One simple way that I have used in the past it to edit the vocals in Premiere Pro. The voice is slowed down form 100% to between 95 and 99%.

Hi John,

It helps if you're born with a great voice. But, very few have a voice like Don Lafontaine.

There are some things you can do to improve your voice recordings. Here are a couple of tutorials using a professional tool, Adobe Audition: "How to make your voice sound Better" and "Five Adobe Audition CC Effects To Better Quality Voice Overs". You probably don't have Audition, but similar tools are available in other audio processing programs. The free program "Audacity" is pretty popular. Here's an Audacity tutorial on "How to make your voice deeper".

Thanks Paz, Sidd and Bob

Very useful replies and yes, you've guessed correctly that I don't have one of those gifted Don Lafontaine type voices. My voice is fairly deep but doesn't come quite how I would like.

I'll try all your suggestions and see how I get on.

Regards
John
