Help! I'm Confused With Regard to Burning a SD DVD?

Postby George Tyndall » Tue Jul 06, 2010 9:21 am

I edited a 300-minute dance contest down to 85 minutes on my PRE7 HD (1440x1080 30 from an HV30) timeline, but when I prepared to burn to a 4.7GB folder the program informed me that was still too many minutes for a SD DVD at highest quality (8.00 MBPS). (I always burn my SD DVDs from a HD timeline as I often also wish to burn my edited timeline to either a Blu-ray DVD or a HD MPEG2 file to my HDD.)

The program stated that I would need 4.37GB for full quality. I still don’t understand why, if it is a 4.7GB DVD, and I only need 4.37GB for full quality, I am getting the message that I will get less than 8.00MBPS.

Although it pained me to edit even one more frame out of the timeline, I eventually got it down to the point that I would still be getting 7.77MBPS of quality.

Now, as I prepare to burn a disc from the folder, Cyberlink Power Producer informs me that the available space on the disc is 4706MB and the required space is only 4501MB, in other words, I apparently edited out some clips unnecessarily.

I'm very confused!

Same problem as with hard disk drives - the actual space is somewhat smaller. DVD-5, rated at 4.7 Gb actually holds 4.37 Gb of data. I know this stuff drives people crazy - and there 'ought to be a law' but it's 1024 vs 1000 or some such. I tried multiplying it out from the wikipedia article and it still didn't come out right.

I would have tried burning one at the lower bitrate to see how it turned out. It might not be as bad as you had envisioned. Depending on the application, the slight degradation might be worth the tradeoff.

I agree. With good source video many people will not notice the image degradation - including me. I have produced single layer SD DVDs an hour and 45 minutes long and found the images to be quite acceptable.

I was not aware that is possibe, Ken. I will try it.

Thank you!

I did that, and it turned out well, Dave, presumably because 7.77MBPS is very close to 8.00.

I'm going to try Ken's suggestion regarding much lower MBPS, then I'll post the result.

You can get down around 5 before noticing an obvious loss in quality.
A good friend of mine often puts 2 hours onto a single layer DVD without any problems.
Just keeps the rate above 5.5 or so and they look great.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

I did not know that, Chuck.

What does that mean in terms of total minutes? If 8.00MBPS can handle 80 minutes, does that mean at 5.5MBPS I can go up to 116 (8/5.5=1.45 x 80=116)?

Does Burn to Folder take a lot longer because of additonal compression?

There's a quality slider going from 1 to 5 in advanced settings that dramatically affects how long rendering takes, a lot more than overall bitrate. This is the spatial quality setting, somewhat like the compression/quality level setting of an individual jpeg file. Compare how long it takes to render a file when Quality is set to 1 vs. 5.

RJ, when saving to HDD, I always use VBR 2-pass, Quality 5 for the best possible quality. Is that the slider you refer to?

George, that is the slider I mentioned.
