Menu pixel aspect ratios

Postby Doogs » Thu Jun 10, 2010 5:23 am

Hey Guys... am in a wee bit of a quandry here...regarding aspect ratios for 16:9 widescreen DVD menu creation in Photohop..

The custom menu that I have been using for my video tutorial is 1049 x 576 with square pixel aspect ratio.

But I have just noticed that Sony DVD Architect 5 likes the aspect ratio of
1049 x 576 with a 1.4568 pixel aspect ratio The Photoshop template has the ratio of 1.46

Would it really make any discernable difference to the viewer as to what aspect ratio that is used in the creation of the menu used in DVDA??

Some editors use 1024x576 and some 1049x576 for the PAL frames size... with square pixels.

PAL widescreen and PAL standard both use a frame size of 720x576 pixels. Going with 1024x576 the widescreen uses a PAR of 1.42 and the standard a PAR of 1.06. So in equivalent "square" pixels widescreen is around 1024x576 and standard is 768x576. Photoshop should have templates for these... if you use 1024x576 with a PAR of 1.42 then the video application will distort the title.

Likewise calculations for the 1049x576 frame size using the 1.46 PAR. I wonder if that is what DVDA is saying... the 1049x576 (square pixels) used a PAR of 1.46.

Cheers for the info Paul.., I thought perhaps I was using the wrong aspect ration on the menu.. but I see that that is not the case now... :TU:
