SIMPLE DVD CREATION APP WANTED

Postby Ken Jarstad » Fri Mar 23, 2012 7:20 pm

Hi gang! Times change. I have changed. My needs have changed. And, I'll bet this crew has some good suggestions.

Remember Premiere Elements version 2? Once you had a video project ready you could select 'No Menu' and PE2 would chug away and create an auto-start DVD for you - EVEN IF THE PROJECT WAS 2 HOURS LONG! PE2 would automatically compress the files as needed to fit on a DVD.

I am doing fewer video projects these days and I find it frustrating to have to calculate the compression and menu structure. So here is what I want:

A DVD burner application that 1) Open the app, 2) Select the video or video/audio files and 3) Burn to disk, allowing the app to adjust the compression for me. It does not require menu preparation. Fast - easy.

Thanks!

Ken

You can do that with Premiere Elements. Do you have It? If you want an autoplay dvd with no menus, don't select a menu template. Just share to disc. The share to disc dialog has a checkbox to fit contents to available space. Sounds like what you're after.

Bob, if he does not have PE, wouldn't ImgBurn, the free download, accomplish his goal quite nicely?

You need an authoring program to create menus for ImgBurn so, yes, it will burn autoplay DVDs.....

EDIT: ....with no menu but it will not compress a file.

DVD Architect studio can do the same thing - you can pick it up as part of Vegas Studio Platinum (or above). I can see version 10 (which has the same DVD Architect Studio AFAIK) for $39.99 on Amazon. You might even be able to get an "upgrade" deal from something else you have. DVDAS is not the fastest at transcoding though (single core) but it will fit to disk.

To see how simple DVD Architect Studio is, just go to the Muvipix home page and type "DVD Architect" in the product search box. You can watch the 3-part Basic Training tutorials I created when I wrote our Muvipix Guide.

Obviously I'm a big fan of the software!

It's very good really - couple of annoying restrictions in the Studio version and the rendering engine could really do with an update to multi-thread it - but otherwise great software.

Slightly OT - have you chaps seen the webinar about advanced menu design?

I was assuming Ken was still using a video editing program to create the video files. If that is Premiere Elements, he doesn't need additional software. If doesn't have Premiere Elements, what he has may do it and there are certainly DVD authoring programs that can do it. DVD Architect Studio is one of the better ones and reasonably priced. But, there are others. I don't keep track of them, though.

My apologies for the delayed reply. I started one this morning - that was overcome by events. I thought I posted but - whoops! As usual you guys keep the conversation going - bravo!

I am still using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 which bundles DVD Architect Studio 5.0. Most of my video projects now are a record of church events held in the fellowship hall. I usually just let the camcorder roll only stopping to replace the tape and the battery. These events are done gratis. They are my donation to the organization. In an effort to reduce my "effort" making these DVDs I try to cut out stuff then some people are inevitably disappointed so I am left to squeeze the recording onto a single DVD. I find that people are far more interested in having the DVD of absolutely everything that happened but not real particular about the video quality or a fancy menu which is time consuming to make. Can you see where I am going here?

I think I have a new workflow.......
Dump the video - export to an AVI - open DAS with a new "Single Movie" - adjust the compression to fit - burn.

I had forgotten that I could make DAS compress by loading a DV-AVI file. The High Def stuff still requires using a compression calculator.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the link Chris. Watched the whole thing, and learned a lot that I've tucked away to use one of these days.

One last, parting shot here. I think the need for a suitable peace of software, as I asked for, is a no brainer for knocking out a quick DVD. I use ImgBurn and CDburnerXP for their appropriate uses but they don't convert videos to the proper structure for playing on a DVD player.

As we've said, Ken, DVD Architect Studio is about as simple as they come.

But for a real no-brainer, you can't beat iDVD on a Mac or Windows DVD Creator on a PC.

Steve, I'm quite sure your new avatar is a symbol whose meaning you have yet to reveal.

I'll take a guess.

Your next book will be entitled Muvipix Recipes?

Windows DVD Maker - I hadn't even thought of it!
Looks like exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks.
