I thought so too. Probably would take less than a half hour to make including picking up the stuff at a hardware store.

Was thinking I might even take it a step further and wrap the "legs" in something ( some sort of padding) Any ideas out there?

Wheat, for $21 USD there is the GorilliaPod.

The legs look a bit more long lasting but about the same idea. I would think that you could get the same legs at a home improvement store and build your own for even cheaper.

There is also the sticky pod: http://www.stickypod.com/suction_cup_camera_mount.html

So you can stick your camera to your car, but I am not sure I would want to risk my camera tooling down the road.

Very cool idea.
