Whats the best way to add some 3D things to a video

Postby tjodork » Wed Mar 03, 2010 1:36 pm

Hi....so this is a little bit out there.....but here goes...
I want to create a video of a large truck going by my house....and just brainstorming...I was thinking I could
a. use a toy truck with fishing line pull string with a green screen and video the toy truck moving by ...then remove the background and insert into video
b. create or find a 3d image (google sketchup) and somehow incorporate into video
c. other ?

anyone done anything like this ....or haven't and have a suggestion/advice ?

You could certainly shoot the moving truck sequence in front of a green screen and then use Chroma Key or Videomerge to overlay it onto video of your house.

We've got Steve's Tips articles and tutorials on using these tools.

It would be less work to cut the truck out and keyframe moving across the screen. If the truck needs to turn then the green screen would be better to give it dimensions, but more time to create.

Played out and edited correctly you could use any shot of a truck interspersed with shots of your house and neighborhood. I've seen plenty of TV and Movies where two things are not even in the same shot once, but you believe they are.

Shot of the house - cut to shot of a truck - cut back to a shot of the house - cut to a shot of a truck driving down a street, doesn't even have to be your street but people will assume that it is.
You know what I mean?

It's like doing a video where you are going on a plane. You can use any video of any airport and any planes, no one will notice if it is edited correctly. You don't need to even be at the airport or on the plane, but the viewer gets the impression that you flew from one location to another just because you added airport footage between two locales :)

When the budget is small you need to be creative :)
