Optimizing Vista

Postby ksnielsen » Fri Mar 06, 2009 9:02 pm

Hi-

I remember seeing a post regarding optimizing vista. I can't find it. There was some sort of command to type into RUN to allocate the RAM differently. Can anyone point me to that article? I have looked here and on the Adobe site.

I like "ever-famous" so much better than "notorious."

Ok, I fee really stupid but I don't see Run in my start window. I am running Vista 64. I know exactly what you are talking about, but I can't find it on this computer. Do you know how to access "Run" on Vista 64?

I don't have my Vista machine up, but RIGHT click on Start, go to Properties and you should see the setup for the Start area there - look in the list for Run.

This isn't my day: this link just takes me to some sort of 'welcome' page even though I am logged into the Adobe forums. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance.

Sorry, Brian. But, the new Adobe Forum software they recently installed broke all the old links. It's a real mess now. Try this one http://forums.adobe.com/message/1872401#1872401

As long as I'm here, I may as well comment on "Run". The Procedure Bobby gave does restore the "Run" box. But, you really don't need it. If you have a normal default Vista installation, you should have a Search box at the bottom of the Start menu. Besides being able to search for documents and files, the default action is to also search programs. In other words, the Search box works like the Run box. Type the name of the program in the search box and press enter to execute.

I like having Run around. Sometimes I use the Browse function. Also, the Search may not always find what you want or take a long time doing it, if the result you want is not in the Indexed Locations.

I turned off indexing -- don't need it. When I do need to search, I'll use the search box in Windows Explorer. That way, I can limit the search to a specific directory or directory tree as needed. I never search from the Start Search box. However, I do use the Start Search box all the time to run programs and utilities. For example, I find it a lot fast to get to the device manager or event viewer this way. I find it's just as fast as RUN as long as what you want is on the standard executable search path. When it's not, I'll type the path rather than let it search for it (and, you would need to do that anyway with RUN). As you point out, searching unindexed files can be slow, especially if it's an unlimited search.

I thought you couldn't turn indexing off in Vista, except to pause for short periods of time.

Click the start button, type services.msc in the search box and press enter. Locate "Windows Search Service" in the list -- this is the indexing service. Right click on the entry and select stop. When the service stops, right click on the entry again and select "properties". On the "general" tab, locate the startup type selection box and change it from "automatic" to "disabled". Press OK to apply the change and close the window.

Indexing is now turned off.

Cool! So it's just a service like any other, except that they don't allow you to disable it from out of the common Windows interface like you could in XP. Thanks Bob.
