Photo Restoration in Photoshop CS!

Postby Gooder » Mon Mar 03, 2008 2:53 am

I have not seen this topic mentioned here that often so, I would like to start off with a ripped photo that I have restored.
These photos were taken from a very good tutorial in a favourite magazine of mine, Photoshop Creative. I believe it was
Issue 15 a (12 page masterclass).

Back issue still available!

There are many techniques to this restoration process but I mainly used the “clone tool” to do the major restoration work.
Small dust and scratches can be reduced using the “Dust and Scratches Filter” but please note it can make areas of your
picture slightly blurred!

I have attached a (before) picture that is ripped and marked, it is also available with the tutorial in the magazine I mentioned
above. The (after) picture is the one I have personally restored and it is not included with the magazine tutorial. It took me a
couple of hours to get everything looking the way it does, although it can be improved, and cleaned up further, but this is a quick
example of what can be achieved!

Lee, great work. Yours is another fine example of why this place is so great, all the sharing of what we find to improve our workflow.

Thank you very much, Steve! :) :)

Thanks & I agree with you, Cinde!
I have learned so much from this forum and thought I would give something back!

Another good piece of software to help with the restoring process is called Image Doctor. I have not used it but it looks very good at what it can do. Although, it can't do everything but for minor rips, dust and scratches, it will complement Photoshop & Elements!

Thanks again,

Very nice work.

You might be interested in Katrin Eismann's Photoshop Restoration and Retouching book, if you don't already have it. I have all three editions as well as her compositing and masking book, which I haven't had time to look at.

She's been inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame.
