Create Video Thumbnails for your Gallery Items

Postby Ron » Sun Mar 04, 2007 1:46 pm

If you'd like to have a thumbnail image of your video (or any file for that matter - *.zip, *.doc, *.mp3, *.flv, etc), there's a simple process to accomplish this.

The format for a thumbnail image is:

yourvideo.wmv
thumb_yourvideo.jpg

First of all, create a new album - let's call it 'My Thumbnails'
Make it 'Private' by going to the album 'Properties'
Scroll down to where it says 'Permissions for this album'
Select 'Me Only' from the drop-down menu
Press 'Update Album'

Now the album will not be seen by anyone but you. You'll understand the significance of this later.

Let's say your new video is called 'project1.wmv'. Create your custom thumbnail, or use the 'Export Frame' feature in Premiere Elements, and save it as a jpg with the filename 'thumb_project1.jpg'

Go to your Gallery and select 'Upload File'
Browse and select your video file
Browse and select your thumbnail image file
Press 'Continue'
Once the upload is successful, press 'Continue'
From the drop-down menu, if this is your thumbnail image, select 'My Thumbnails'
Press 'Continue'
From the drop-down, if this is your video, another album of your choice
Press 'Continue'

You should now have a customized thumbnail for your video creation.

If the thumbnails were in a 'public' album, then the thumbnails would appear to be duplicated and everyone would see, not only the thumbnail for the video, but the exact image jpg file next to it. Since the thumbnail album is private, there's no simulated duplication.

The thing to remember is - make sure the video filename matches the thumbnail filename, especially the case of the name:

Incorrect
BobSmith.wmv
thumb_bobsmith.jpg

Correct
JaneDoe.wmv
thumb_JaneDoe.jpg

That's all there is to it. If you have any problems or questions, post them here.

Let's get some nice thumbnails representing your videos in the Gallery :)
Regards,
-Ron

Thanks Ron. I tried it out and it works. The only area I had trouble with was setting the icon for the album. I appears that it takes the last jpg uploaded. I think there is a pull down selection for this in the album properties, but it is only gives you selections within that album.

Don't worry about setting the icon for the album. Different tutorial :) But, definitely explore away !

Edit : Well. I just checked and you have nailed the thumbnails. Good going! :toothy8:

What about size for the thumbnails?

.. also .. that's neat .. but now I don't know what kind of file I'm about to open (zip, wmv, flv, etc). I found the generic thumbnails rather informative :(

When I mouse over the icon I can see the file name, which includes the type.

I have to admit that it is nice to see what you are clicking on. So maybe as a way to start a standard for those with custom icons we just put the file type in parens. If started. Hope this does the trick. Of course, mouse over will always be there for doube checking! :tongue8:

Yes, that's a nice compromise. What size did you make your thumbnails .. or does that matter?

I'm not sure it really matters. The biggest one I had was around 700k. Ron might be able to shed light on the optimum size though.

The thumbnails in the Gallery are sized to 100 pixel width (scaled proportionately). So, anything larger than that is a waste really.

That's what I figured, Ron .. and no point using up space on the site with a large photo that serves no purpose.

If I understand correctly, export from PE3 a freeze frame to a file with the name thumbs_myproject.jpg.

In the gallery, I create a new 'private album' and import the thumb jpeg.

Do I then create a second public album and upload my file & thumb?

I am confused :???: Maybe I am reading too much into the steps.

Upload the thumbnails in the 'My Thumbnails' album and the video to an album of your choice. If you don't have a public album yet you will need to create one. Just remember, the thumbnails go in the PRIVATE 'My Thumbnails' album, everything else can go in other albums, public or private.

Ron will probaly be along to straighten out anything I missed or mis-stated :)

Yep, Chuck nailed it. Put your video in an album of choice (public or private), then put the thumbnail in the private album. This is so the general public doesn't see the thumbnail only. The key here is the naming of the thumbnail. ' thumb_ ' and your video name - with the jpg extension of course.

Any questions, post away. It may (and will) help others.
