PSE9: Print Photo Calendars Locally!

Postby George Tyndall » Mon Dec 06, 2010 8:47 am

With PSE4, one has the capability to produce very elegant Photo Calendar Pages. Subsequent versions of PSE lacked this feature but offered instead the capability to produce Photo Calendars. Problem was, these could not be printed locally but instead had to be sent to Kodak for production -- at a cost, if memory serves, of $19 each.

With PSE9, one can produce Photo Calendars either via Kodak as in the past OR locally, that is,on one's personal printer.

I still think the Photo Calendar Pages are a better option, for the following reason: Whereas the Kodak product has a spiral binding, I'm not aware of any method for binding a calendar that has been printed locally. With Photo Calendar Pages, no binding is required as the individual pages are meant to be viewed one-by-one in a frame.

And that is one reason I continue to use PSE4 (but only on my XP machine as the software will not work on the machine in my signature).

I used to print out a photo calendar once a year and give it to my wife as a Christmas present. Every month on the calendr contained a photo from the same month previous year.

When they removed that capability from PSE, I started using Koday or Shutterfly, etc. They all do an excellent job with the calendars and you can also get a descent discount if you wait for the right offer. They have templates to choose from and it is easy to set up.

I think in the end it may even cheaper to order on line because the cost of ink and paper will cost you a lot. And then you need to figure out how to bind it.

This year I wil go with shutterfly because I received a $20 credit when I purchased the PRE/PSE9 bundle on Amazon.com

I've done a couple of the Kodak calendars, and I agree that they do a nice job. Apart from the expense, what I prefer about the Photo Calendar Pages in PSE4 is that, in addition to looking very elegant, the size is larger (6"x9" images on 8.5 x 11 paper). In addition to the 12 pages with differing images, I include a very nice looking 8.5 x 11 frame which the client can easily open for the purpose of changing the images each month.

With regard to paper and ink, the former is not a problem thanks to Bob, who informed me about Costco's Kirkland offering, and gpecht, who informed me about Red River's offerings. And with regard to ink, that too is not a problem thanks to Steve, who advised me where to purchase Claria inks inexpensively.

I'm just getting ready to print out a 2011 calendar for my Mom (she needs one she can write on). I grabbed a template for each month from a great on-line source that provided one file in pdf that downloaded into PSE7 with transparency. I then added my own special dates, a few photos on each month, a cover page and notes page at the end .. and will then take it to the local office supply place for binding. Yes, it took some effort to get it exactly as I wanted it, but I had complete control over the process in PSE7 .. and I'm thrilled with the end result!

Do all office suppliers offer this? Is it a spiral binding like Kodak's? What is the cost?

I asked over at Office Depot. They'll actually do the entire calendar if you just supply photos. But I just wanted the binding. I think it was just a couple bucks.
It looks like something this .. either portrait or landscape .. and they supply a plastic cover and backing. I didn't get any further details, as this is exactly what I'm looking for. Because it's Christmas time, I'd assume many office supply places would do this.

Whoa!

I'm assuming one uses double-sided paper to make these. Is that correct?

I will further investigate this for sure.

Thanks for making me/us aware.

That would seem reasonable. I'm not, because I've got the photos on the Calendar pages themselves, since Mom's always got hers folded back. I haven't had mine bound yet, but I'm printing on 65# bright white paper .. and I really like the way it came out nice and sharp .. and easy to write on (perfect for my purpose).

Thanks for sharing that information. There are both Office Depot and a Staples nearby. I will check them out later today and then report back with what I've learned.

Staples has on display 5 different samples of the binding that they can do "while you wait if not too many."

One choice is a bound soft-cover book for $5.

The others are variations of spiral bindings, and each is only $2.

All are for standard 8.5x11-inch paper

The one that I like the best is "our most popular." It consists of a clear plastic cover on the front and a black back cover composed of heavy-weight paper with a texture. To my surprise, it actually looks quite elegant.

Nelly Barajas, Copy Center Associate, at 1701 S. Figueroa St. (213-746-6330) says one may submit one's job online at http://www.staples.com/copyandprint

Office Depot had a smaller and less-impressive selection, however, the Customer Service Specialist, Glenda Mejia, at 2020 S. Figueroa (231-741-0576) was very helpul.

It would appear that my Epson Artisan 50 will be getting a workout this weekend.

Thanks again for bringing this inexpensive alternative to my/our attention.
