Scanning Questions

Postby desmo11225 » Fri Sep 19, 2008 6:50 am

Hello Everyone
Re. New Free Tutorials, I would like to transfer all my old photographs, slides, film, etc, some are VERY old, to C.Ds.
Is there a tutorial to do this, starting from scratch i.e what scanner or scanners are needed, any other hardware required, tips on how NOT to lose precious old photo's and any other info I need.
The tutorials need not neccessary be free I would be very happy to buy them.
I'm sure they would be well worth buying and would be a good saving, instead of doing a lot of trial and error experimenting, I have been very successful putting digital photographs on to C.Ds
I hope my request will be successful.
Best Regards to All

Not a really difficult task Desmo, and no tutorials currently.

There are a number of good scanners, some fairly cheap, some quite expensive, all depends on what your plan is and how much scanning you need to do.
I highly recommend Photoshop Elements if you don't have it already, then we can also recommend a scanner. Just let us know approx. how many slides and negatives you have and how many photos.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Desmo,

http://scantips.com/

is a site with info on scanning that I have seen recommended on multiple Photoshop Elements forums. I used it a few years ago and found it helpful. I don't know if its scanner list is current - but the principles will be valid even if the scanner model numbers are not.

Chuck,

It seems that Desmo's question might be better under a different forum. What do you think?

Wow. Wayne Fulton's site is still active!

I remember working with him more than a decade ago when he started that webpage. What a wealth of information, and still mostly relevant today as not much has changed in scanning.

Good to see some "old" things are still around, besides myself :)

If you have a lot of 4x6 photos or around that size, I highly recommend the Epson 2480 + Photo Feeder.
I scanned over 6000 photo's and it worked very well. You put about 24 pictures in and hit go and it will do all the work.
Using AutoIt I created a program to notify me with a voice message when the batch was done or if the scanner jammed.
This made it very easy to keep the scanner running. I'd be happy to share the program with anyone.

In addition, the Epson software does an amazing job for other size photos.... If you take the photo feeder off and put the normal
cover on, you can set several photos on the fladbed and it will automatically locate the pictures and create separate pictures.
Maybe other scanner software can do this but from what I've heard Photoshop Elements does not do a good job of that.

The scanner is relatively inexpensive (less than $100) and the feeder is around $150. There is maybe newer Epson scanners that
do a great job....and possible would work with the feeder but I'm not sure.

Hello Chuck
Thank you for your prompt reply and encouragement, yes I have Photoshop Elements 4 and Premier Elements 2 [I have'nt used Premier Elements 2 a lot though].
I have approx 200 2"x2" inch photographs 100 3"x3" inch 250 6" x 4" inch about 400 negatives all these are old photographs 60years or more, also 3000-4000 6"x 4" 15-25 year old holiday photographs.
It's the old ones of the children when they were small that I'm really interested in [I'm 83 years this year] so it would be something parents and grandparents will be keen on doing too.
Think of those photographs with Grandad's narration to go with them.
Once again thank you All for a great forum, I have a job to believe I'm able to do all this.
All the Best

Hello Chuck
Thank you for helping me with my scanning old photographs question, I could'nt get the Epson Photo 4490 deal you reccommended, I live near London U.K. but I bought one any way and it works a treat, I've made quite a few slide shows allready, some 15 years old and some of the children when they were small 50+years old
Another question I'd like to ask is, I have photograghs on several C.Ds and would like to put them onto one C.D there's maybe a couple of hundred all together, how will I do that and how many would I get onto a C.D or would a D.V.D be required.
Once again Thank You for All Your Help over a considerable time now and I've made myself a paid up member after all this time.

Hi Desmo, Glad the scanner is working out for you :)

CDs will hold about 700mb of data, so it depends on what the total size of all of the images is.
Put in each CD and go to My Computer, right click on the CD Drive and select Properties.
This will show you the amount of space taken up on the CD, do the same with the second CD.
If the total of the two is less than 700mb then you will be fine, DVDs can hold a little over 4GB of data.

To get them all onto one CD you will need some form of CD burning software, RecordNow, Roxio, Nero, something that will burn the files onto a CD.
You will most likely need to transfer all of the images to a single folder on your computer, then burn them to a CD from there, just easier that way.

Greetings Desmo,

If, like me, you find some old Kodak Disc Camera negative reels amongst your archive you may like to have them scanned as well, but then your scanner fails to adapt!! I found the same problem and then found ProcessC22.co.uk and to my surprise there were some good memories returned. Have a look at their web site as they offer a comprehensive service. None of the High St photo shops wanted to know and had nothing to offer.

Contact details are;
info@processc22.co.uk
0845 2244 496

They promised an 6 - 8 week turn around but it actually took about 12 weeks, but worth the wait.

Best wishes,

Gerry
