Just an FYI, I have updated both the PSE Layer Mask Actions and the OOB action to include support for PSE 7. For PSE 7, I've included a setup for both the new action player and the effects palette -- you can choose to install either or both.

Since I do not have PSE 7, I would appreciate someone trying them out and verifying that the the setup is correct and functional. Thank you!

I just wanted to add my name to those who have expressed thanks for these actions. I am full of awe and wonder at those who are able to not only conceive of the idea but are able to somehow carry it out and then are willing to share it.

The layer masks came in handy last night. I had a picture that I wanted to change the depth-of-field in to blur-out some clutter in the background. I played around with it for a bit and couldn't get it the way I wanted it. Then I googled "photoshop gradient blur" and read up on a few techniques. Here's what I ended up doing:

- Open the picture.
- make a selection mask of the subject, and save the selection.
- deselect.
- Duplicate the background Layer (layer 2).
- Gaussian blur (layer 2).
- add a hide all layer mask to (layer 2).
- load the saved selection (layer 2).
- in the layers pallette, click in the icon of the "picture".
- edit>cut.
- in the layers pallette, click in the icon of the "mask".
- use the black & white gradient tool to modify the mask (on the picture).
(the black part of the mask is clear and the white part is blurred.)

That made the subject nice and focused, and the foreground stayed in focus, while the background gradually blurred-out. Nice effect! Thanks again!

Hi,
Recently upgraded to PSEv7 and was wondering if anyone else has tried to get this working in that version?

My PSEv7 is acting somewhat quirky and I wasn't sure where to first start some troubleshooting.Never had a version trying to constantly connet to the Net so, I'm thinking that might be some of it- the quirks, I mean.

Placed this into some slightly different folders due to the version, so I was wondering if anyone has it working?

Hi Jay,

I was told these actions were working with PSE 7, but I don't remember who that was that told me. Chuck might be using them with PSE 7, perhaps he can confirm whether that's the case or not.

When you installed them in PSE 7, did you use the actions from the pse 7 folder in the actions zip file or did you copy them from your PSE 6 installation? If you copied them from pse 6, go back and get the distribution zip file an install them using the instructions in the pse 7 folder in the zip file. Each PSE version differs in how the actions need to be packaged and where they go. The PSE 6 package is definitely different from the PSE 7 package. Also, for pse 7, there are two versions of the actions. One is designed to work using the PSE 7 guided edit action player. The other installs in the effects panel like the older actions. Instructions are in the zip file.

I will try to check this out today if possible. I have used the Actions in verion 6 but not 7. I don't really use version 7 much, kind of stuck on version 6.

The first thing I noticed is that there is no "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop
Elements\6.0\Locale\en_US\Photo Creations Metadata\Photo effects\" Folder. Actually no "Photo Creations Metadata" folder either.

It seems that all of the metadata XML files are now included in the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Photo Creations\photo effects\" folder, the same one that the action files go into.

I am still checking it out but that is the first difference I see.

I have both options, Out of Bounds Part 1 and Out of Bounds Part 2 listed twice in the Effect panel.
This probably isn't right, two of them have thumbnails and two don't (they are just black).

Paul, you might have to take a look at this if you have version 7 and a little time.
They've moved some things around so the instructions don't completely apply anymore.
I will keep playing around with this as I get some time.

Another discovery, I think you have to change the names of the XML files.
They have to be named exactly the same as the actions (inluding the underscores) and then replace the end with ".metadata.xml"

Testing it now.
