I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to use Home Server knowing that

Some of the issues I had read about WHS is why I went with just buying external drives for now. I figure that I could wait for the WHS to clear up some bugs and hopefully drop in price. The if I go the WHS route I can still plug in the external drives to WHS.
