How to add layer from other photo

Postby robbie410 » Mon Dec 29, 2014 12:33 pm

Hi, have just started to work with layers. Followed tutorials, especially Photoshop Tutorial 3, but have difficulty in bringing a layer from picture 1 into project where picture 2, is the base. Cannot find a way to get it into the layer panel on the right of the screen. I can either have picture 1 in the screen and by clicking the picture 2 name in the top toolbar it appears but picture one disappears. Guidance would be appreciated.

I'm not sure which version you have, but try Window > Images > either Cascade or Tile.

Hi Robbie,

You are in the default tabbed image mode which only shows one image at a time. In tabbed mode, you will need to use copy and paste. Select picture 1 and ctrl+click on the layer in the layers panel to select it. Type ctrl+c to copy the pixels. Select picture 2 and type ctrl+v to paste them as a new layer.

You can drag the layer from one image to another directly, but you need to see both images at the same time. One way to do that is to change to tiled mode which will show both photos side by side. You can change to tiled mode in Premiere Elements by selecting Window>Images>Tile from the menu. Once you can see both photos at the same time, select the photo which has the layer you want to copy (photo 1) by either clicking on the photo or on the name in the toolbar. Now, click on the layer you want to copy in the layers panel and drag it over the image of the photo where you want it to go (photo 2). Release the mouse button and the layer will be copied into photo 2. You'll probably want to press and hold the shift key while dragging to maintain the alignment.

If the resolutions for the two photos are different, the resolution of the destination file is the one that controls the size, you may want to change the resolution of the source image to match before copying the layer.

Thanks Bob, I have tried to follow your instructions and have managed to get the photo 2, to insert, into the frame and layer panel. Not totally confident yet. Realise about the resolution and will try and perfect that. Currentl have changed both pictures to same pixels before pasting to main picture, but the photo to be inserted is huge and have had to reduce it using the handles. Will look for more tutorials on layers, may find more on Muvipix, and then read the Muvipix Guide book when I get home. Thanks, as always, anyway
