Where to Find Free Downloadable Layer Styles for PSE?

Postby George Tyndall » Wed Nov 16, 2011 1:41 pm

I've read that there are many sites on the web that offer free downloadable layer styles that one can add to one's PSE library (the Contents and Effects tabs), however, I haven't been able to find any of the relevant URLs.

Suggestions please.

Well, yeah! :yh:

Will they will also function with PSE7, not only PS?

If yes, please advise me how to install as I don't see any instruction on the site.

I don't know if they will work in PSE. I thought you were using PS.

They will work with PSE, you just need to install them properly. Here's a site that describes how to do it: http://www.scrappersguide.com/tip_sg_08-10-13el.html

Since you also have Photoshop CS5, you can also create your own unique layer styles and save them to an "asl" file that can be installed in PSE.

Thanks for that info and link, Bob.

Addendum: That link is specifically for PSE7 :TU:

SECOND IMPORTANT ADDENDUM: Upon trashing and re-creating the database file, I see that the photoshop.com content that I downloaded when I was still paying for that has been lost (see yellow ribbons in below image). And since I am no longer paying, I'm not aware of any way to get them back AND still keep the 100s of layer styles that I just downloaded.
True, I did run Rollback-Rx before downloading, but if I roll back then I will lose those I just downloaded, won't I?

That's not good that you would lose the Photoshop.com content. Did you try installing the styles without deleting the database file? The way it was supposed to work was that new content would be recognized when PSE restarted and would be automatically added to the database. Unfortunately, that didn't always work and the deletion of the database was a workaround to force things (styles, effects, actions, etc.) to be added when the database is rebuilt.

I did not try, as the link stated not doing so would likely not work--that's probably true, as to install your masks just now, I also had delete and rebuild the database, as I mention in another post.

I just noted that there is a 30-day trial peiod for photoshop.com after purchasing it, so I made the purchase and re-downloaded all the lost content for which I had previously paid.

Over the next 30 days, I'll further contemplate whether there is enough new material to merit the $49.99/year, and if not, I'll ask for a refund.
