Clean up Video

Postby ridon127 » Sun Oct 10, 2010 10:05 am

I am doing a dvd for my class reunion. as you know on an airplane, you can't carry on alot of stuff and i will not check any kind of equipment. my hubby was supposed to go but got put in the hospital and wasn't able to make it. therefore, my carry on stuff was cut in half. the video isn't the greatest because of low lighting which i wasn't expecting. so is there anyway i can "clean up" the video and make it look a little better? I have PRE 7..thanks

Hi Donna,
There is a great Premiere Elements plug in called Neat Video, it isn't free but makes low light video look much better. It can even make some not so good video look great, just depends on how bad it is to begin with.

You can probably raise the brightness and maybe play with the shadow/highlight in Premiere Elements and get it looking pretty good without the plug in. But after raising the brightness you might notice some video noise, that's when the plug in would come in handy.

You can also just try the auto correction and see how that does, might be just right.

When you start to play around with it let us know. If you can post a sample we could help you with what might work best.

I hope things start getting better soon, sorry your husband wasn't able to make the trip with you.
We are praying for you guys :)

I didn't know there was an auto correction. I haven't done much with anything the last 6 months. I will have to check out the plug in and i will try to post a small clip of the video.

My hubby finally went back to work Wed after exactly 6 months off. He haq a bowel obstruction that landed him in the hospital that weekend. The ladies at the church told me to get out of town and they took care of him. I knew he was in good hands. In Dec., he will have 2 tumors removed form the left lobe of his liver and the bowel blockage repaired. when that heals, they will remove nearly the entire right lobe of his liver. the liver surgeon says he won't have to have anymore chemo, but the onocologist says he probably will. But theyre have been so many answered prayers in the last 6 months. He has gone to being told with chemo, he might make it 2yrs, to having some quality of life until God calls him home.We definately appreciate and want prayer.. you guys are the best!!!!

I hope all goes as well as it can. Our prayers are with you.

One thing I did with a project that had low light is to not use the video at full screen.
I used a motion or still background and at times had video in two or four quadrants. The smaller size helps the quality.

I also experimented with all of the various color correction options - what works on one clip doesn't work on another.

Thanks Steve. It has been a rough and uncertain road but knowing I have lots of prayer warriors and friends, it sure helps. Thanks for being here for us through this difficult journey..

Now back to video, for some reason, i can't upload anything to the gallery or on the forum. I was going to upload a short clip i needed to repair but it says on the forum area, you can't upload avi and it just won't do anything in the gallery. i try but after about 30 minutes it just stops..
thanks!!

How big is the file Donna, there is a 50mb limit per file I think.

Might be a little too close to 50mb, can you cut it down a little more or do you have a little smaller clip than that?

You should be able to brighten this video fairly easily, Donna. Just open the clip's property and adjust the Image Controls for brightness and contrast.

(In version 9, the Image Control properties are not included on a clip by default, so you'll need to add the effect from the Effects panel and then go into the Properties panel to adjust it.)

BTW, the video you posted to our Gallery was an AVI, which is why it was so large. If you use Share/Computer/WMV next time, you can output a high quality Windows Media file that's much longer -- and will play more easily online.

Hi Donna.

I don't have any PrEl versions any more but here's what I tried very quickly in PPro.

I upped the brightness slightly and adjusted the contrast to retain some of the saturation that was lost as a result of the brightness adjustment. Then I applied the NeatVideo filter to reduce the noise. To my eye the result was not perfect but it was a lot better. (I am a big fan of the NeatVideo plug-in. It is one of the more useful add-ons IMHO). :???:
