Slide shows on a 1080p projector

Slide shows on a 1080p projector

Postby Mr. DMS » Fri Jul 18, 2008 8:22 am

i'm trying to create a slide show with stills off my Canon 30D images. The show is about 17 minutes long and roughly 200 images. Music is included. I'm creating the .WMV file via the Export function in PE2. The images were resized to 1920 X 1080 to fit the native resolution of the display. The latest settings I tried were...

VIDEO:
Windows Media Video 9
2 - pass constant bitrate
1920 x 1080 frame size
24 fps
Square Pixels (1.0)
5000 kbps maximum bitrate

AUDIO:
Windows Media Audio 9.2
2-pass constant bitrate
96 kbps, 48 kHz, stereo (A/V) CBR

AUDIENCES:
Compressed

After 8 HOURS of rendering (I have a 3 year old Dell machine) it was ready. I streamed the image to my Sony Playstation3, feeding an Onkyo 605 AVR for sound and viewing on a Sanyo 1080p projector (capable of 24fps). The problem is about half of the images randomly appear VERY pixelated and slowly build to a sharp image, then the next image may appear perfectly sharp. Almost like they are waiting on the rest of the data to arrive. I've tried saving the entire .WMV vile to the PS3 HDD thinking it was a network issue. No change, same problem. We've tried various images sizes, frame sizes, bitrates... all the same result.

I can take those same images used to develop the slide show and just stream them to the PS3's internal slide show presenter and they appear tack sharp.

What am I missing?

Have you applied panning and scanning to your photos? That could explain the pixelation in the images, particularly if you have Scale to Frame Size selected.

Otherwise, realize that you're dealing with a tremendous amount of video data and a heck of a lot of compression! Xboxes have very powerful graphics capabilities but, like most game boxes, they're relatively slow, compared to computers. It could be a hi-def WMV file is just overloading this puppy!

Do you have the option of using a BluRay disk instead?

No special panning or scanning is being used. I never thought about the processing power being an issue with the Playstation3 given the kind of games it plays along with being a Blu-ray player. We are upgrading our PC very soon, so I may consider getting a Blu-ray write drive.

I've tried using PE2 to burn a standard DVD. It works and i can play that mpeg-2 file on the PS3 fine, but the image quality is no where near how the images originally look. What settings should I try to get a quality DVD based image?

Thanks

Also, if i remember right the file size of the final WMV file was less than 120MB... does that sound correct? I figured it would be larger.

Not sure of your system specs, or how well version 2 handled large images.
Premiere Elements in general doesn't handle large images very well unless you are using a HDV project.
It might be that you will need to upgrade to at least version 3? Hopefully someone will come up with a good answer for version 2 :)
