Crop then resize or visa-versa: Workflow for PE4 & PSE6

Postby silved2 » Sun Oct 28, 2007 3:11 pm

I am making a slideshow of a youth soccer season recap of about 350 still images set to music. Most of these images need some cropping to highlight the action or individual. My question is, should I crop each photo then resize them all to 1000x750 or resize the 350 still pictures via Process Multiple Files then begin the cropping tasks?

What crop format do you suggest from the PSE6 selector, 8x10, 5x7, no restriction etc.

Also, if certain images will have some extensive pan and zooms (zooming in real tight on an image) should I consider using a higher res than the 1000x750 on those specific images?

Thank you,

David

I would crop the photos first. When you then do the Process Multiple Files resize, they'll all then be the same size -- roughly 1000x750.

No need to worry about those other settings.

1000x750 large enough to give you plenty of extra space to pan and zoom. It's nearly twice the size of a video frame, so a full-screen video of a 1000x750 still will be scaled to down about 65% of its size.

Thanks Steve.

Do you agree then to always select 750 for height and have the constrain porportions box checked. PSE6 will then calculate the correct width, which will not always be 1000? For example, I have a photo that I cropped and the pixel dimensions are W=654 and H=1849. When I choose H=750 W becomes 265. and the Image that was once 3.46M is now 582.3K. Will these values give you nice results on the DVD?

When you set Constrain Proportions (which you do want to do), you can choose either width or height.

I usually recommed choosing height, because this gives you the resolution, even if sometimes the photo doesn't fill the frame horizontally.

You can choose width if you want -- but then you'll still essentially be in the same situation. Either your narrow photo will not fill the frame horizontally or it will bleed off the screen vertically.
