Hello from Kit

A place to introduce and tell a little about yourself.

Hello from Kit

Postby Kitwn » Tue Dec 15, 2009 11:14 pm

Hi everyone,

I've been browsing the forums for a year or so but have only just signed up with real money so thought I'd introduce myself.

Now living in tropical Western Australia, I used to be a pom (Aussie slang for British) and spent 21 years working for the BBC as an engineer and technical trainer. Involved in programme delivery rather than content creation I was lucky enough to spend 16 years at the Beeb's technical training centre at Wood Norton where I got to see, and sometimes try out, most of the whole programme making chain. If you want to know how to broadcast digital TV or radio, by the superior European methods of course ;) , I'm your man.

I didn't get into video making until after coming to Australia in 2004, by which time home editting had become practical, and, with my wife Christie, have produced three editions of our "Down Under Diary", a compilation of travelogues and pieces about what we get up to here in Australia designed to make the friends and rellies back in England jealous.

Current plans are to produce some training DVDs for lace-makers which will need more advanced menu structures than clunky old PE produces, hence finally subscribing to Muvipix and chosing Steve's guide to DVD Architect Studio 4.5 as my free book.

Keep up the good work.

Thankyou everyone. I've already had a look at some of the tutorial content and Steve's Tips. Some very useful stuff in there.

Where abouts in Cheshire are you, John? I was raised in Wilmslow.

I have a YouTube account in the name 'Broadcastingskills' (the name dates back to when I did some freelance training after leaving the BBC) which has a few examples of what I've done. I'll have to read up on how to add links to this forum.

Not sure how much of my technical knowledge is useful to other members, mostly relates to how to get your finished masterpiece to 60,000,000 viewers at once, but I can rant all day about the details of PAL, NTSC, JPEG, MPEG audio and video coding and what an 'I' frame is if you really want me to.

Using pre and ps7 on a home-built PC based around an intel E8400 processor and as much of 4G of RAM s XP home can see.

Just five or so miles away from Wilmslow. I was born in Knutsford and now live near Tatton Park, near the Rostherne (main) entrance.

Small world! A lot of my school mates used to get bussed in from Knutsford and I remember spending many a summer's day at Tatton, even sailing on the mere a couple of times nearly 40 years ago.

Enough of that, nostalgia's not what it used to be.

How small can this world get? I was bussed in to Wilmslow from Knutsford to attend Wilmslow Grammar School (as it was then called)in the 60s.

That's the one! My sister Diana was there from about 1963. I started in 1969 after the Wilmslow site became the boys school and the girls had moved to the new site in Handforth. Di told me she used to watch the steam trains going along the tracks adjacent to the playing field.

In later years I was one of the mad bikers who used to come back from a visit to the girls school 6th form common room along the A34 at 80 mph to avoid being late for the afternoon classes!
