muvipix Forum Registration Requires Admin Approval

Postby Ron » Mon Mar 19, 2007 5:50 am

Yes, it's sad, but with the advent of spammer infiltration, we have no choice but to resort to Admin Approval of registrants.

This will be a simple process. Interested users will fill out the registration / profile form and an email will be sent to the muvipix Admins. The email address will be verified along with *other information included in the form. There are certain domains / countries that thrive on all that is spam and most of the time, it's pretty obvious.

*If you'd like to speed up our approval process:
  • Please provide a valid website (which indicates a lateral interest in muvipix.com OR that is definitely not spam intended - this is fairly easy to spot)
  • An entry in the interests field showing a bona-fide interest in anything muvipix related
  • Or simply send an email through our contact form after registering and provide a short statement why you wish to join

We probably won't catch all but if you fool us and you are in fact a spammer in disguise, no problem, your corresponding post will be deleted almost immediately (Admins/Moderators are here quite often) and your username and email will be banned as well, so go ahead and waste your valuable time.

Also, if a spammer does make it through and manages to post, please do not reply to it (avoid reading it, if at all possible), this is exactly what they want. If the subject looks suspicious, don't fall for their trap.

NO :spam1: is welcome here !
Regards,
-Ron

Ron, there used to be a memberlist at the top by usergroups and search. What happened to this. Was it removed because of the new requirements?

Sorry about the delay, this one blew right by me.

Yes, it's definitely related. We removed that list for a few reasons:
One being that spammers love looking at the username list to determine what they can use for a quick spam & duck post (non-banned usernames).

Secondly (and probably most important), sometimes the spammers will infiltrate and even before they become activated by an Admin, they can have severely objectionable information in their profile (porn, warez, illegal websites and even pornographic usernames!) that is accessable by anyone.

And lastly and not so important - what spammers love to do is create the profile and disappear. What this does is create their website link / description and make it available to website crawlers (sorta like advertising their site on another site). With the memberlist destroyed (or not indexed), this is no longer possible. They're still registering from time to time, but they're easily spotted and all of their information is deleted and the names and email addresses are put into a banned list. Everyone should have noticed that spam posts have been reduced to zero here at the site since the changes :)

No one will ever win that war, but we'll definitely win a lot of battles ;)

-Ron

Thanks Ron, I assumed it was something along those lines. Keep up the good work of making this the best forum around.

Does this mean that members presently on Muvipix have to register? I don't have a website.
All the best,
Bill

When registering for the Forum, Gallery and Chat Rooms please use a valid email address ;)

Chances are, if you use a phoney email address, you will not be activated and will not be able to post or upload files.

Thanks!
