Music Video: I'm On Fire

Postby rustysterling » Thu Apr 05, 2007 10:15 am

This is really a concept video at this point. But I created a music video of my step-daughter Genevieve using some concert footage and marrying that with some flames (the song is called "I'm On Fire"). I love to get some feedback. It's in the Gallery.

Hey there Rusty. You have a talented daughter. I can see why you would be enthusiastic about her singing career.

I would bring out the flames more. Intensify the color. Right now they're sort of greyish.

Another thing I think I may play with is using two different types of flames intermittently. There are times when the flame you are using definitely works, (like when Genevieve hits the line 'I'm on fire' and having her engulfed) and other times when it would probably be better to go with something else (across the bottom of the screen for example), or have nothing at all.

Further, while your daughter is lighted allright enough, the rest of the stage is black. I'd give the viewer some perspective and let them see a bit more of the stage she is using by adjusting the light levels. Of course, that'll probably mean washing out your daughter, so a happy medium would need to be struck.

The sound (because I know you're such an efficionado on this) is great! :-D

Thank you for showing us your work. As of yet, with the move that I'm in the middle of, all I can do right now is just talk about doing editing. So you're one up on me right now.

John.

Thanks John. I like all of your ideas. That's why I created this as a concept. I'll probably shoot new footage of Gen. Ron also suggested that I use the flames when she sings the chorus.

BTW, this was a two camera shoot: one fixed (Canon Elura 100) and one roaming (Sony HDR SR40). I had fun doing the editing. I shot the entire concert and put that into a movie (about 1 hours, 20 minutes in length) with intro and credits and an outro using pics from before and after the show. I had to change tapes on the Canon during one song, so I just ripped it from her CD and used it as the soundtrack for the outro.

Here's a thought for you - what if you copied the fire clip and place one on each side of the screen, and maybe add some fire across the bottom of the screen, so that they surround your daughter... Then when she sings "I'm on fire" (or some other key point) you could have the fire engulf her as well.

That may help you deal with the blackness of the stage around her while still focusing the viewers' attention on her and her song.

I don't know about Rusty, but I think that'd be a great idea.
I wonder if it'd be possible to have the flames change color somewhat from time to time. Copper greenish, for example.

Great job, great sound. A thought on the flames...you might try replicating the flames and/or using motion to increase the size.

Not sure if this is a plugin or a separate track of video.

You might experiment with a track matte using the flames as your matte, and also your background layer.
Happy Editing,

It was a separate video track with opacity set to about 30%. I'm not sure what you mean about the matte idea. That's a new one for me.

Have a look at Burger transitions - they're FREE, easy to download and put into the Plug-ins/En-US folder of your Programs/Adobe/Premiere Elements file. They show up as extra transitions in the Effects/Transitions panel, and the Flames transition is probably just what you're looking for. The only problem is that they are transitions, no good for a whole clip.

Bill,

Given some of the feedback I've gotten the transitions might just work better. I agree with some comments that the flames over the entire video is a bit of overkill. Flames at transitions might just be a better technique. I'll experiment with it. Is this the right link:

Burgers transitions

And will someone help me create links properly? This one isn't so bad but I know that some links are really (I mean REALLY) long and just spread out a thread stupidly.

This is the way to display links that are a bit long:

Hi Rusty. Ya know, after looking at the video, I really think that the 'fire' is distracting. I don't think you really need it. The singer and song are great. The editing is very good. Maybe you could just add it as an effect at the end. Just my 2 cents.
