Snow Days

Postby Ron Hunter » Sun Feb 16, 2014 8:05 pm

As most of you probably know, a large snowstorm blanketed the East Coast of the US this past week. Here in NC we had a huge snowfall (huge for NC), with about 9 inches here and up to a foot in other areas. My entire family was "off the grid" for 3 days, so I used this as another opportunity to test the Rebel T4i with video.

I created a 4.5min video that shows the snowfall here, along with short clips of what my family does to keep themselves occupied when not at school or work. I also included a few sledding/snowball scenes. Project was edited with PRE12. I wanted to post the video here because this is the first video where I used color correction extensively and I'm curious how others perceive my efforts. Also, I shot half the video with the T4i and the other half with my Vixia HFR400, and I think the differences are interesting.

The first half of the video (snowfall and around-the-house scenes) was shot with the Rebel T4i and 18-135mm IS STM lens, 1920x1080 30fps. (Don't freak out when you see the dog lot and dog house, they haven't been occupied for a long time and I just haven't broken them down yet.) I struggled with proper T4i focusing outdoors, partly because of the crazy snowfall and partly (mostly) operator error. Proper exposure and white balance were challenging but I'm not experienced with this DSLR yet. The outdoor DSLR shots benefited greatly from color correction, but the indoor DSLR shots changed very little with color correction. I was very pleased with how the snowfall shots turned out (I used a tripod for them).

The sledding/snowball scenes were shot with my Vixia HFR400 camcorder, 1920x1080 60i, set to "Snow" scene mode, and using a monopod. I think those action shots turned out better than the action shots filmed with the DSLR. Interestingly, the outdoor HFR400 shots had almost no visible change when color correction was applied.

Very nice filming Ron! I really liked the opening before and after opening shots. The shot at :30 was very rich. The HFR400 shots were very good in color, but I could see that the T4i shots had more depth. Great job on the edit too. :TU:

We had another snow storm the other day and thought about getting out and shooting. But, so sick of the snow just wasn't up for shooting. Glad you did and I could enjoy the snow scenes without getting cold.

You did a great job lining up the before and after opening shots. Did you note your location and focal length?

You may have heard that the UK is also suffering from continuous bad weather. Not snow like you folks but a stream of storms bringing high winds, rain and floods. Will they never end......

Sorry about your rain, John. But at least you don't have to shovel several inches of it off your sidewalk twice a week!

Hilarious picture though!

Ron, I liked very much the video: very fine research in elegant lines and shapes and space.
Very enjoyable, it flew so fast...

John, very funny pic: I can't imagine how the photo was build...

Thanks for the feedback! Cheryl I did note the location but not the focal length for the before/after shots; I think I was at 18mm. And thanks for the note about the T4i shots having more depth, I missed that during the course of editing the footage.
