Copyright message

This is not related to Premiere Elements, but I can't find a forum for Cyberlink.

I am using Cyberlink Powerdirector 365 to capture analog Hi-8 home recordings.

On a number of occasions, I have come across the capture stops with "The video is copyright-protected. Recording is prohibited." message.
Rewinding the tape and do another take of capturing, it has so far been successfully in completing the task.
However, it is just a tad annoying receiving this message after some 45 minutes of capturing.

Any idea why PowerDirector would think the home video is copyright protected ?

Hi, Ted. Our PowerDirector forum is right inside the CyberLink Corner sub-forum.

That said, I've never experienced what you're describing so I can't duplicate it -- but it sure seems like a strange notification. I didn't know PowerDirector even had a copyright scanner, let alone why it would trigger on some of your captures.

How are you capturing? Are you using the Diamond VC500 or another capture device?

Must be the reason I couldn't find the forum.

I am capturing with Diamond VC500 from a Samsung Hi-8 video camcorder model VP-W90 purchased back in 2004, from memory.

I have tried composite and s-video connection, but both gives the same result.
Although a bit annoying, I can live with it and hope my old camcorder stays in working condition for another 30 Hi-8 tapes.

After searching as to why PowerDirector brings up the copyright notice, apparently it has been a problem since early 2000.
From what I gather it has something to do with "Macrovision" - not sure what that means.

Apparently, several users of Cyberlink PowerDirector have complained but this problem is still there.

Someone suggested using OBS for capturing, others VirtualDub.
However, think I'll stick with PowerDirector and just take the time it takes.

I will however, create a ticket with CyberLink and report back their suggestions.

Thank you for your response.

In analog content, there is a content protection mechanism calls Macrovision. It is usually implemented in a commercial VHS tape but sometimes there would be false detection in a home VHS video tape due to the tape is dirty. This protection detection mechanism is implemented by the capture devices, not PowerDirector.

When the capture devices detected there is protection, the device will tell PowerDirector to stop recording and then PowerDirector will show the error message as you saw.

We are afraid that the issue is not able to be resolved from software side. Per explained, the protection mechanism is implemented by the capture devices and PowerDirector has to follow the industry standard to stop recording.

It is suggested to clean your VHS tape as a possible solution to avoid false alarm from the capture devices. You may also try to update your capture device driver. It could be a possible solution as well.

If condition remains the same, please provide the following:

DxDiag. Kindly refer to the steps below and/or you may check the tutorial video on how to generate the DirectX Diagnostic Tool:

1. Press the Windows key and type dxdiag in the search box.
2. Click on Dxdiag.exe.
3. You will see a green progress bar in the bottom-left of the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window while the program is gathering information.
4. When the progress bar disappears, it means your report is ready.
5. Click Save All Information.
6. Save the file to your desktop (make sure to save it as a text file) and give it a name you will remember.

2. Click Logo of the software or the software name on the upper right corner to see the Product Version or SR number.

That's actually a pretty detailed response, Ted. I'm impressed.

It doesn't make your job any easier of course. But at least you know CyberLink cares enough to respond.

I was pretty impressed too, I must admit.

I have e-mailed Diamond a similar request including the answer from Cyberlink.
They may have an updated driver as mentioned in Cyberlinks response.

From my point of view, I can only see the Macrovision is too strict but understand the need to protect copyrights.

I'll report back when/if Diamond respond.

Here is a test version 15 that should fix the copy right problem. Note the default video source is S-Video so if you are using the yellow composite connection click on the Settings tab located in the lower right portion of the program and change it to composite. If the screen turns green after the change, just click on the edit tab and then re click on the capture tab

Do not uninstall version 12 and you will still need it for editing and burning

With the Test Version 15 of PowerDirector I have managed to successfully digitize the Hi-8 tapes that reported copyright issues.

Not sure what changes there are between PD 15 and PD 365 but something is working as it should.

I will continue capture with PD 365 and use Test Version PD 15 to any tapes that reports copyright issues.
