Audio and video synchronizing

Postby tedco » Sun Oct 29, 2023 11:21 pm

I have digitized a number of PAL Hi8 video home recording to pc with Elgato.
Some of them have problems where sound and video are not synchronized.
I have tried to fix this with running them through HandBrake with Fixed Frame Rate.

Sometimes it fixes this, but other times it does not.

I then tried to increase framerate from 25 to 29.97 and this seems to work wonders.

Any thought is much appreciated.

Thank you for your time,

My suggestion is that, prior to digitising, you check the video properties using MediaInfo (free).

It is a really useful tool to have available and should help with the settings in the conversion software.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply.

I have a copy of MediaInfo, but can only check the file after digitizing from my analog camcorder.

I am using Elgato Video Capture which I choose after Amazon review, but maybe I should have chosen another.

If you have any recommendation for other capture devices it would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks again.

Ah! Yes, of course. Silly me! (Note to self - read postings more carefully before responding. )

It is a few years since I last converted analogue (VHS tapes) to video and that particular use was the only experience that I had.

I used an old miniDV tape based camera that I owned, using the camera's 'digital out' connected by firewire to a card in my PC. For the input side I used one of these - SCART from VHS machine to composite input to camera:-

It was quite a nice earner for a while, converting VHS wedding videos to DVD.

There are a lot of folk on here that have previously needed analogue to digital and maybe they will chime in soon. Sorry that I wasn't more helpful.

I'm not a fan of the Delgato digitizer. I've seen its name associated with too many incompatible video issues.

I think it's no secret I prefer the Diamond VC500, in my experience the best -- and the software produces easily editable MP4s.

Thanks for your replies,

Steve, I downloaded PotPlayer and configured as your video but when I go to Video > Video Recording >Start/Stop Video recording, a pop-up window tells me that "It is not possible to perform capture operation since there is no video and audio in the file".

Not sure what is happening here.

I have connected my Hi8 PAL analog camcorder to my computer using Elgato usb capture card.

Can I use PotPlayer instead of Elgato's supplied software?

Thanks for your time.

I don't know that that will work, ted. It might. But I don't know that it will.

My experience is that PotPlayer does not work - or at least I can't get it to capture video.

However, OBS Studio https://obsproject.com/ does work fine and also excellent in synchronizing audio/video.

It is reasonable easy to configure and use.

Just for info.
