Recommendation for Blu Ray burner & media

Postby Ron Hunter » Sun Oct 04, 2009 8:55 pm

Hello all, I searched for "recommendation blu ray burner" and the 27 hits didn't seem to address the question.

I have a hi-def TV, a hi-def camcorder (HV30), and a Blu-Ray player. I have made a handful of HDV home videos and I am interested in burning them to Blu-Ray so I can see them in hi-def. (I know I can connect the camcorder to the TV, but that is more of a hassle than just putting the disk in our BD player.) It seems that the BD burners on TigerDirect and Newegg are:
- Around $200.
- Most people love them, a few people get lemons and hate them.

Can you make a recommendation for a BD burner, preferably based on your own experience? What brand of BD media has served you best? Can you recommend a vendor?

Thanks for your help!

I suspect that you are in the US so any supplier recommendation that I might make would be a European/UK one, so probably not what you are looking for.

For a burner I have the LG GGWH20L. Media - I always use Verbatim for all DVD needs (DVD-R, DVD-R DL, BD).

The LG that is listed in my signature works well (burns Blu-ray DVDs, SD DVDs and Lightscribe) PLUS it came with a very complete version of CyberLink software.

As I described in a previous post, the CyberLink software can be used to work around the problem that Premiere Elements does not offer the option of burning a Blu-ray to folder:

viewtopic.php?f=57&t=4309

The LG's documentation lists preferred brands of BD-R and BD-RE. I've been using Panasonic BD-Rs, which Fry's electronics sells in a package of 5 for $35 (with white printable surface), however, I believe it was Bobby who said he saw some (unknown brand) in a package of 3 for $10 ($3.50 each).

For my SD DVDs I've begun using Verbatim, and I've had no "coasters" so far.

Hi there. New to this forum, howdy people.

I've jumped to Blu-Ray recently as well, and I started by doing exactly what you're doin' -- asking around.
I've looked at brands, and surprisingly, I saw and picked one not from the mainstream brands.

I'm now using a DIGISTOR Self-Powered External Blu-Ray burner. It's a lesser-known brand, but it's got a Panasonic drive in there.

"Self-powered?", you say? Well yeah, the really nice deal here is that this one does not require a power cord, it gets ALL its power from the USB interface. Pretty nifty, huh? And oh, btw, they have a slot load version of this one as well. I'm a pretty conventional guy, so I guess tray load works for me.

As for media, I concur with Mr Tyndall here, I use Panasonic media as well. I prefer the Archive Grade Optical Media that they have. Very very dependable, no toasters so far as well. Hope that helps.

Welcome to muvipix, John. And thanks for the recommendation of the Digistor USB drive. Kind of pricey, $375 usd at Amazon. But if it keeps working well and your BD media burns without problems that is good news since there are lots of poor performing optical media and drives on the market.

I have my eye on the LG WH08LS20K - OEM burner at Newegg for $159.99 Don't know how reliable it is though.

BTW, a tip, next time select the URL button when composing a message with a URL. You will be able to paste your URL at the cursor right between the tags it provide you so folks can just click for that location.

Hi John, and welcome.

We would like you to post at least one more time to ensure that it wasn't a "post and run" please. It looks too much like a commercial in disguise.

Thanks!
Regards,
-Ron

While we are waiting for his second post, can anyone else recommend a BD burner? :-D The LG burner recommended at the top of the thread doesn't seem to be available on Amazon, TigerDirect, or NewEgg.

Seems like it has been replaced by a newer model. I was able to find this on a UK site.

Here is the LG on Newegg for $170, plus favorable reviews:

I have used a Lite-On Blu-Ray burner that worked very well.
It was loaned to me for a few projects last year. I burned about 8 Blu-Ray discs with it and had no issues at all.
Drivers were easily accessible and had no installation issues or problems using the drive with Premiere Elements and Premiere Pro/Encore CS3.
