AVCDH Footage in Windows Media Player

Postby Michael_Dean » Fri May 08, 2009 11:30 am

By default, WMP11 lacks an AVCHD codec. Rather than install another media player, I'd like to make this one work (for free, of course!). What have you done?

Unfortunately it is not straightforward to do it for free. I have Cyberlink PowerDVD for playing back my AVCHD files. Once installed you can use virtually any media player. Robert came up with a way using the Haali Splitter and the Core AVC codec. Look at this thread:

Using the Haali splitter and fddshow or coreavc is well known. Here's a page with more detail including Vista 64 related info.

Windows 7 will include support for avchd natively.

That is really good news.

Installing PowerDVD worked on my laptop (Vista Home Premium 32 Bit) but not my desktop (Vista Ultimate 64 Bit). I'm not sure why that would be the case since I'm new to Vista 64.

I just discovered that the latest release of GOM Player does a really nice job with AVCHD in Windows 7 64-bit and Vista 64-bit. The URL is http://www.gomlab.com/eng/GMP_download.html, current release 2.1.18.4762 6/9/09.
