Help! "PE running very low...system memory"

Postby George Tyndall » Fri Aug 08, 2008 10:32 pm

My Task Manager indicates I am using less than 2 of my 3GB of RAM, but my 1-hour HD project gives me this message anyway then repeatedly crashes.

I've checked Help and cannot find any topic.

Is there a fix?

Go into Premiere Elements preferences (Edit/Preferences) and delete the Media Cache.

Also, when you start the program, hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift as it launches to reset the program.

Eureka!

Thanks ridon 127 and Steve. I got two more of the 13 DVD Markers done but that's as far as I can go without repeated crashing. :(

Chuck,

How does one increase the "paging file"? My Scratch Disk, Drive D, has 400GB of defragmented space. Do I need to do that anyway? My Drive C also has oodles of space.

I don't know what else to try.

Thanks for that link, Chuck.

Changing the page file size for the C Drive did not work.

WTM informs me that my Peak Commit Charge is 2.06GB, which is less than my 3GB of Physical Memory, so if I understand Bob correctly I have enough Physical RAM, nevertheless, I am still getting the message that PE4 is running very low on System Memory, followed by a crash.

I am running MCE 2005, a 32-bit OS, with a Q6600 multiprocessor, and one of Bob's comments suggests that may be a problem, however, I have successfully created previously a similar HD project without difficulty. The only difference between the previous project and the current one is that I am now attempting to add a HD DVD menu that has Scene buttons with motion. It's when I double-click on the DVD Markers to add a title for the button that I get the crashes.

Have you defragmented the drives lately George?

How about the amount of free space on your primary drive?
If there isn't enough free space you will get this message also, need about 20+ GB free.

George,
I had a similar experience with crashes using the titler. It seems to consume resources and then crashes. I have 4GB of ram, 500GB of free space for the project, and a pagefile of 4Gig. I watched task manager as I added titles. A 32 character title would increase ram usage by over 30 MB. What I would up doing was watching Task Manager and periodically save the project and restart PrEL when it got to over 2+ Gigs of memory. I don't remember the exact number of memory, but you will see the memory usage spiking.

I think that there are other resources or a memory stack that gets blown. Maybe some resource that should be released is not being released. It is clearly not a physical memory problem.

Good luck,
-Vernon

Hi Chuck,

I discovered that the problem was instrinsic to my HD WMV 720p file. I closed the file then opened the MPEG file that I had previously exported, and--problem instantly solved! :bounce:

BTW, the resulting Blu-ray disk, which contains 13 separate music videos and 13 matching Motion Menu Buttons on an HD DVD Template, is FLAWLESS.

In other words, thanks to intensive study of the PE4.0 manual, plus the help I got on this site when I ran into problems, I progressed from knowing NOTHING about video creation when I joined your site on May 28 to the production of a VERY professional-looking HD DVD.

It seems words cannot express my gratitude to you and the many members who helped me, but I will nevertheless say THANK YOU!

Way to hang in there George, you were very persistant and we can't say that about everyone.
We are really happy for you and hope that you continue to make great looking videos for years to come :)
