What is the Proper Preset for Editing 1024x768 WMV movies?

Postby George Tyndall » Tue Jul 08, 2008 8:58 pm

I have been using Premiere 3.0 to export WMV movies to my iPod (mp4 format).

Some of the WMV movies are HD Widescreen 720p, while others are SD 1024x768, not widescreen. The latter look good on my iPod despite using the 720p Widescreen preset.

Is that to be expected? Is there a better choice?

If you are using 1024x768 files in a 720p project they will be scaled to the 1280x720 frame size (unless this is unseleted) and so will be stretched horizontally to fit the screen. I assume you are then exporting to the iPod format preset, perhaps with the small size you can not see this distortion. But if it looks good then no problem.

Hi Paul,

Yes, that is the preset that I used, the reason being that there are also some 720p widescreen clips that are included along with the WMV slide show that I previously outputted from PSE4.0 at 1024x768.

But if I wanted to edit only the 1024x768 slide show without any widescreen HD clips, what would be the correct preset in Premiere 3.0? Is DV-NTSC the only option? If so, it seems a shame to lose the higher resolution 1024x768 and replace it with DV-NTSC 720x480.

Perhaps you can do the same as Robert suggested for the high resolution slideshow. Import the 1024x768 into a standard resolution DV-AVI project (not widescreen as 1024x768 is a 4:3 ratio). Do NOT de-select Scale to frame and then export as a WMV at the required resolution... take a look and see what it looks like.
