Specific to Premiere Elements version 2018
by bobfranz » Sun Sep 08, 2019 9:49 pm
Is there a template or tutorial on how to create a film strip graphic to use as part of a video intro? I've seen some and even have a Premiere Pro step by step instruction, but it's been a long time and I'm hoping there is something more recent.
The effect is an old sprocket type film strip scrolling on the left third of the frame, with either video running in the background in the frames or (easier) photos.

Can you link us to a clip on YouTube showing this effect?
I'm sure it could be done -- but let's get clear on exactly what you want before we start describing how.

Steve,
I figured it out. I'll post a follow up later with a finished product.

Here's what I came up with. https://youtu.be/T6oyBjGQ96EIt's not perfect but I learned the basics of how to do this. I'll use this effect for an intro to a ski club video in the next few months.

Very clever. I would like to know how to do that in Vegas.

Thanks. I'm flattered but actually I saw this effect years ago on one of the Chuck-Steve sites pre Muvipix. I guess I've learned enough here and through "Cool Tricks and Hot Tips" to do something like this.

One observation and question. What I posted has 10 film "Frames" with video clips playing in each of the 10 frames. I first tried using a 10 Frame filmstrip with the 10 videos "sized" to fit the 10 (tiny) frames. That didn't work. The quality of the videos was so degraded when resized (to the size seen in the YouTube video) that I started over. I found that a 5 Frame filmstrip worked fine with no degradation. Then I did a second 5 Frame clip and synced them together, a meticulous keyframing process.
So my question is about the degradation. Do you think it is due to PRE18 limitations? Or what?

I don't know why you'd see any degradation in the image, Bob.
Although if you had that many video sources playing at the same time, I can imagine it would be taxing enough on your system that the program could have reduced the quality of your preview.
But the actual finished product should still look fine.
Is the image degraded in the final output or only in the preview?

Yes it was degraded in the final product - MP4. I'll run another quick test. I might have had some settings incorrect.

Here's the new test which looks good: https://youtu.be/dT5YoVyY8PkI'm glad you asked and I ran another test. For times that I want a "10 frame" this will be much easier than syncing two 5 frame clips to look like one. I don't know what I did different. I suspect the settings were wrong. One early test the settings were on PAL. Not good.
