Depending on the job I will sometimes edit the audio levels manually on the timeline, very time consuming.
The other option I use is the Normalize filter in Audacity

I have more gain than I know what to do with now and actually have to reduce it. One important pieces of advice. Make sure the microphone you want to boost is plugged in BEFORE installing the software. Reboot BEFORE downloading the Peace software. Otherwise nice and straightforward.
