How much Video fits on DVD disc?

Postby kenskopp » Sat Mar 11, 2017 8:23 am

Hello Gang,

My questions is this. I am using Verbatim DVD-R discs. When I make up a project that equals 60 minutes in the Work Area, the project will fill up the dvd. The dvd says it will take 120 minutes of data. What is happening? What discs can be used to make a project that shows 100 minutes on the Work Area? Thank you in advance for your guidance.

You should be able to easily fit 70-80 minutes of DVD video on a DVD disc, Ken.

I'm not sure what "The DVD says it will take 120 minutes of data" means. Where are you seeing that?

The bit rate and your desired quality, among other things, will determine how much will fit on the disc.

Steve,
Label on Verbatim Cover says "4.7GB, 16x speed and 120 min". When I burn to folder, I notice that a message will tell how much GBs are in project. I guess there must be a relationship between minutes in work area and how much menus and instant movies I create. What brand of Disc is recommended? I need to order more discs.

I also use Verbatim discs.

You can't go by time alone in determining how much will fit on a DVD. The size of the movie on the disc is a function of both time and bitrate. Furthermore, DVD content is compressed and the amount of compression will affect the bitrate. By using a higher compression, you can lower the bitrate and allow a longer duration movie to fit. The trade off is that lowering the bitrate will lower the quality. It's difficult to say how much compression you can use before the quality becomes unacceptable because that will vary with both the content and your perception. But, for typical content, you can generally use a rule of thumb of about an hour of content at highest quality on a standard 4.7 GB disc or up to about an hour and a half and still have good quality.

Good point, Bob!

I should have said that you can fit around 80 minutes of video at full quality on a DVD disc.
