can anyone recommend a decoder (hopefully free) that will enable me to play dvds with Windows Media Player 11

You can install the free Descaler decoder here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Dsc ... ilters.htm
This will enable MPEG2 and DVD playback in Windows Media Player.
