Free CD/DVD burning software

Postby Steve Grisetti » Mon Mar 31, 2008 9:56 am

If you're tired of the problems caused by the DVD burner software that came installed on your computer (Did someone say Nero?) and you want to try something new, here's a highly-rated, free alternative.

http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

Getting rid of your old software can be a bear though. So you'll need to uninstall it, run a registry cleaner (such as the terrific free download EasyCleaner) and reboot before you install CDBurnerXP.

Not only is CDBurnerXP better supported than most OEM software, but it's less likely to cause interference between other programs and your DVD burner, increasing the likelihood that you'll be able to burn directly from Premiere Elements.

Out of the extensive list of compatible burners, mine isn't listed. But I'll try it anyway.

I too will give it a try. Right now I am using freeware called ImgBurn, which also works very well. I'll let you know which I prefer.

It's like this, I can play a DVD on my Cody $29.95 DVD player that I bought at the drug store, but it won't play on my $99 Sony DVD/VHS combo player that I bought at Best Buy. The reason is that the CD/DVD software only burns data discs, not video discs.

ImgBurn will also burn video discs. I think the inteface is also simpler to use.

Here is the link:

ImgBurn was listed in the same article as highly recommended, Johnny.

Let's keep them both "stickied" to the top here so we can find them next time someone asks.

Thanks for your input, guys!

I just downloaded the latest version of ImageBurn and was quite surprised I didn't need the Nero ASPI driver. It turns out that it's only needed on Windows 95/98/ME. I'm just a few years behind.

Unlike CDBurnerXP, the DVD that ImageBurn burned played back on both my Sony and Coby DVD players, meaning that I think it creates a real Video-DVD.

One more word on ImageBurn. You no longer need to build those .iso image files first. You can just navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder and then burn.

ImgBurn does create a real Video DVD.

The default format is ISO9660+UDP, which I believe is the format for creating real video DVDs. Just leave it at that setting and you'll be vreating video DVDs from Video folders without problems.

Other capabilities are creating ISO images from DVDs or CDs, and it also has the capability to write them. I have used this program to duplicate CDs.

As far as writing folders to DVDs, here are all the options (although leaving at the default ISO9660+UDF has always worked for me):
You can write ISO9660+UDF file system to disc, as well as plain old ISO9660, or ISO9660+joliet, or ISO9660+joliet+UDF, or plain old UDF. You can even specify the version of UDF (although I only used the default and it works fine).

This is an excellent freeware program that I highly recommend.
