How to get rid of Norton software

Postby Steve Grisetti » Thu Jan 03, 2008 9:38 am

Norton software (particularly Systemworks and 360), in the opinion of many, is about as close to a virus as any software you can pay for, and it's alleged to cause many more issues than it fixes. Unfortunately, it's installation is so "viral" that removing it is nearly as difficult as removing a virus.

This site offers a great tool for removing Norton software (as well as several other great, free tools for maintaining your computer).

Steve, the Norton website itself has removal tools that you can download to uninstall Norton products. Granted, it's not on the home page, but a short search produces it. I've used it in the past when I've had problems that I couldn't resolve. Try this page:

That brings me to this, what do you recomend? Mine is expiring in a few days and I thought about going with Norton 360 but it is rather expensive. I have found some others that offer the same for about half the price.
Thanks

I suggest AVG anti virus, it is extremely good and best of all FREE!

I have used this as my only anti virus program for over 10 years, it has never failed me.
Other members have used it for a long time also, just ask what they think about it :)

AVG is an excellent free antivirus, as is Avast http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edit ... ag=lst-3-3. Probably the best free firewall is ZoneAlarm http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm-Firew ... ag=lst-3-4.

As a former fan of Norton 2004, and after a nightmare experience with Norton 2007, I switched to ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/ ... US&lang=en and I LOVE it! It's $49.95 and protects up to 3 computers. The firewall is rock-solid and the antivirus is based on the Kaspersky suite, which consistently ranks at or near the top in comparison tests. It requires a little more input from the user than Norton, but without any crazy system conflicts or crashes. They also have a free trial.

Just, as an aside, I'd just like to recommend that you NEVER run two antivirus programs (or two firewalls, for that matter) at the same time. It's counter-productive and can actually decrease your overall performance.

It's okay to remove one antivirus program -- and even remain connected to the internet! -- before installing a new one. No virus is going to sneak in the meantime (assuming you're not downloading email or poking around questionable sites).

I'll echo that recommendation for (free) AVG and Zone Alarm.

Some others that I use without problems are Spybot Search and Destroy, CCleaner and Eusing Free Registry Cleaner.

I neglected to mention that some people have had conflicts with ZoneAlarm Firewall and Avast.

AVG and ZoneAlarm Firewall should play nicely with each other.

If you decide to pay the $49.95 for the ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite, you won't need AVG because the Suite has both a firewall and antivirus in it.
