Here's a Epson 4490 for $98 direct from Epson. It's refurbished.

I purchased a refurbished Epson 3490 a couple of years ago for $69. Works great and looked like new when I got it except it doesn't come in the orginal box.

The Epson V500 is the V4490 except it has a white LED light source, which means no warmup time and the LEDs last forever. It would be my choice over the 4490. I don't mean to step on Chuck's toes here, but Newegg has it for $165.00 after a $50.00 mail-in rebate. That's $35.00 cheaper than Amazon. Shipping is $7.00.

No problem Dave, always trying to get the best deal for everyone :)

I think that for the price the 4490 refurb at the Epson store is by far the best deal at under $100, and besides I hate rebates.

After reading more reviews, ordered a new Epson. Looks like the best buy for the buck. Thanks for all of the links and suggestions.

Hey Chuck, does the scanner come gift wrapped and autographed? A new business for you would be to have your own line of products, thinking on the lines of the George Foreman grill. Steve could video your infomercials :-D

In all sincerity, appreciate everyone's suggestions, Thanks.

I must be the only person in the world to have never been flim-flammed out of a rebate. I've probably submitted a dozen in my lifetime and have never had one turned down. Some of them took forever, but eventually they always show up. I suppose one of these days I'll get took big time.

I have never been ripped off when submitting a rebate form, the check has always arrived at some point.
What I don't like is that the item should sell for that price without a rebate being necessary. The companies are banking on the fact that people won't send in the form.
If the item sells regularly for $150.00 but can sell for 100.00,after a 50.00 rebate, then sell the thing for $100.00 to begin with!

I specifically look for deals without rebates, I will even pay more for a similar item that is on sale with either an instant rebate or some similar discount. Oh, did I tell you, I hate rebates

I don't like them either Chuck, but so far I've been unable to convince the purveyors to discontinue their use. :-D Forgetting or not bothering to send them in may be a part of the strategy, but there's an even bigger issue here - the use of your money. One person's $50 may in itself be nothing, but suppose they have the use of 10,000 people's $50 for 6 or 8 weeks or more? Pretty cheap loan, huh?

I'm with you, Chuck .. I'll pay more just to avoid the rebate hassle. Unless it's at least $50 I'm not going to bother (my time is worth more than that !). But as stories go, when we bought the 42" high def television a few years back, the stand for the TV was $500! .. with a $500 rebate! Did it .. got it! Couldn't believe it!

That reminds me of when we bought our HD TV from ABC Warehouse. Delivery was free, but we had to pay $20.00 to the delivery guys and then submit for a rebate. We did get it, but what a scam.
