LED light recomendation

Postby momoffduty » Sat Dec 26, 2015 5:10 pm

I've been looking into getting a LED light (cheap!) to use on my 70D. Cold shoe or on a tripod. Most likely I would put in on my Joby Gorilla Pod. Prefer dim-able. The light would be used indoors as fill light either for video or photos. Mostly for shooting the grandkids and my pups. Any recommendations?

I do not have one but I have been looking at the Light Panels:

The following DIY video could be modified to make a smaller version.

This cheap enough? Aputure AHL-HC100 Amaran Halo LED Ring Flash for Canon Cameras

Haven't used it, but it looks interesting. Adjustable over a 3 stop range. Guide number 49 at iso 100. Comes with a set of adapter rings. Good for macro but should be fine for general photography. 45 degree coverage. With a guide number of 49 it isn't going to be that bright as a primary light, but as a fill it may be ok. Definitely not for distance shots.

I think I just talked myself into getting one of these to play with. :fg:

I just noticed they also make an led block light

You can probably get either of these on Amazon.

That looks like a cool toy Bob! The halo video said the distance around 1 1/2 meters. Looks like the block is about the same distance. It appears that the halo is more versatile going on the lens. If using this as a fill light for photography would the persons catch lights be circular?

Thanks Sidd, I am DIY person, but that project looks too entailed. Good option for $17!

Yes, the catch lights would be circular. But, the further away the light from the subject, the smaller the catch light ring will appear. Ring lights are popular in fashion, glamour, and commercial photography precisely because of the distinctive shape of the catch light. But, those units are typically much larger than the small on-camera units so they can be used at a greater distance from the subject without losing the distinctive shape. I'm not sure how large of a catch light a small unit like this would produce at the max working distance.

Thanks for the explanation Bob. I'm torn between the 2 options and will have to overthink it a bit. ;) Is this the same as rim lighting in photography?

No. Rim lighting is a form of backlighting. The idea is that by placing the light behind the subject, light will spill around the edges or rim of the subject and create a halo or silhouette. Usually, you will use two lights, one on each side but behind the plane of the subject. This creates a spill of light over the edges of the subject and helps define the contour and separates the subject from the background. Used this way, it's often called an edge light. Take away one of the lights so it lights just one edge and it's often called a "kicker". You can also just light specific areas -- hair lights and shoulder lights are examples of this.

Ahhhh thanks for the explanation! I thought about getting one of those little lights that you can place behind an object. The flash will trigger the light. Now I can't remember the name. I think they were only $10 or so.

I ordered the Halo! With Amazon Prime I saved a few $. Also ordered this mini slave. I've been wanting to try this out for creative photos.

I bought a Halo too. Came today. Batteries not included ;)

They weren't kidding about that 1 1/2 meter range. On the plus side, the continuous light setting is working well and I like the ability to dial the brightness up and down. Increasing the camera's ISO should help get greater range, but I haven't tried that yet. I did not care for the flash setting though. It lights up like a modeling light and you cannot adjust the intensity. With the slow sync speed of the flash, it seems to be affecting the exposure. I think for still photography I'm going to forget the flash feature and just use continuous lighting. I mainly wanted a ring light for macro and copy work and it looks like it's going to be good for that.

Really looks neat for macro video! My lens usually casts a shadow on the subject. Do you have an Amazon link, Mom?

Bob, Good find. I'd love to see some of your macro shots.

Thanks, Mom. Funny thing. It showed up as $48 on Amazon for me until I clicked your link.

Hope you enjoy it... can't wait for more doggies! :yh:

There are two models -- HC100 for Canon and HN100 for Nikon. The hot shoe connections are different.

hmmm... This must be the one I looked at (for Canon):

http://www.amazon.com/Aputure-Amaran-AHL-H100-Light-Cameras/dp/B00H3UHSH8/ref=pd_cp_421_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=129M1C2WS96BHWCE9Y6H

It says $49, not $48. :ha: (Once upon a time I had a friend who had a tee shirt that said, "I've just had my brain washed... and I can't do a thing with it!". I'm afraid I'm just losing mine. :fg:

Does the light take power from the hot shoe connection or is that just to hold it in place, since you mentioned batteries?
