Free screen capture?

Postby momoffduty » Fri Oct 17, 2014 6:12 pm

Is there a good free screen capture for recording your actions in a program?

A friend at work uses screencapturer.com, it produces output animations in wmv or avi format but it doesn't capture your mouse movements.

I would also love to learn of a free screen capture program that captures every action on screen and produces video files. Doesn't the Frugal Filmmaker use something like this? I seem to remember him mentioning such a program but I don't remember details.

Steve beat me to it. I was going to suggest camstudio as well. I recorded this with Camstudio back when Comet ISON was on its way to the sun. The software I was using to illustrate the comet's path is called Stellarium. You can adjust the framerate and resolution of the recording in Camstudio to help save space. I believe I used 720p @ 24 or 30fps, output to AVI. Obviously, higher settings resulting in larger files.

Thanks Steve & Kent. No tuts in mind, but this is what I was looking to achieve. That was my next question if you could record in 720p. I may have follow up questions and will post in this thread. Thanks again!

I made the terrible mistake of going to CamStudio.ORG and downloading their program. My computer immediately become contaminated with malware.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT FROM THERE !!!!!!!!!!! Go to SourceForge.net and download it from there and even then be very careful how you do it. And, when you first try and run the program it will tell you there is an upgrade available DO NOT ACCEPT !!!! It will take you right to the CamStudio.org site where you'll get contaminated with malware. I was also getting errors stating that I needed the latest version of CINEForm and that I needed to go to their site and purchase it, when I declined I got a different error message and after that I was in a loop between the two error messages. WHAT A NIGHTMARE !!!

What is everyone else using ???

I'd like to have a free - or inexpensive screen capture program too. I had CamStudio before my computer crashed. When I went back to download it again I ran into a lot of suspicious looking things and backed out of there. I don't remember now which source I tried.

Thanks, Chuck!

$50, made by TechSmith, which makes Camtasia. Looks good.

I've done some reading and people seem to think version 12 is not as good as 11 was and that perhaps 11 isn't as good as some of the older versions. Oh well, I've not had the earlier versions, so I'll try the 12 demo for 30 days.

thanks!

Definitely worth a try Paz, I don't use the screen recording because I have Camtasia but the screen capture software is great. I did try the screen recording when I first got SnagIt and thought that it was pretty good for the price.

Apparently Snagit used to, but not now, in either version 11 or 12.

Hi Paz,

I have Snagit version 11 and there is an option to capture the cursor or not, the option is on the classic capture screen. If you need a screen shot let me know.

Chuck,

You're right. I'm wrong. Snagit can be set up to show mouse movements! Just figured it out. You need to get the drop down to show the RED dot, look below that and create either a still or video profile with 'show cursor' selected.

It will not highlight mouse movements with a bright color, like red or yellow, but it will show them.

I've watched many tutorials where the authors fly around the screen so fast I don't keep up with their mouse, let alone their keyboard shortcuts, and I get so frustrated and have to go back and watch the same segment over and again. I prefer to have a brightly lit mouse, like the yellow circle in the free CamStudio version, to help me keep up.

BUT, I have just been through my computer preferences and set my mouse cursor to the largest size and also found that I could set it up to show a pulsing target ring around the cursor by hitting the control button. I'm going to play around with that set up and see if Snagit can do what I need. I don't expect I'll need to make more than half a dozen or so. That's a bit so spend on
Camtasia. A lot to spend on Adobe's product. (Although I do confess to hearing a little devil nagging in my ear that I could sign up for Adobe Cloud and have the best of everything Adobe has to offer. Sheesh! Wouldn't it be nice to have $$$ to throw away!)
