Problem with Windows Media Player 12

Postby Gerlinde » Fri May 10, 2013 12:57 pm

I noticed something strange with WMP on my new desktop running Win 8 ( see my sig for details ). When I play video clips captured from my Canon HV30 camera they start out normal, but then slow down after a couple min and get out of sync with the sound.
This are all clips I have captured in the past via FireWire with PRE 7, 9 or 10. My first thought was something went wrong during capture and I started recapturing the footage with PRE11. But then I noticed that those older clips played just fine when played in PRE.
So it seems to be a problem with WMP12. I don't have that problem on my old notebook running Win 7. I assume it has something to do with the installed codecs on my desktop.
I have the k-light codec pack in addition to all my other diverse video editors installed, so I should have all the necessary codecs. I'm at a loss how to troubleshoot this, any ideas?

One thing you can try is to turn off Windows Media Player in Programs and Features. That will uninstall Windows Media Player. After that is done, you can then turn it back on in Programs and Features. There's a link near the upper left corner that you need to click to bring up the list of Windows features.

Be careful with that KLite codec pack. I don't have it installed anymore.

OK Robert, I got finally around to try your suggestion, but I'm running into the following problem:

Capture.JPG

Does this mean I have to uninstall and re-install Windows Media Center?

I didn't have Windows Media Center turned on when I uninstalled Windows Media Player and don't recall seeing that message.

But I just confirmed that when you uninstall WMP that WMC is also uninstalled. And when you select to install WMC, then WMP will also be selected since WMC is dependent upon WMP.

After I uncheck the box next to Media player, I get a new window informing me that it is looking for the files. Once it finds them I have to restart the computer. But after the restart Windows Media Player as well as Media Center are still installed :conf: What am I doing wrong?
This seems to be a Windows 8 issue, my new notebook running Win 8 has the same problem. With Win7 on my old notebook this does not happen. It has also Media player 12, but a different version number > 12.0.7601.17514. In Win 8 it is 12.0.9200.16420.

Check the Windows Media Player performance options:

Open Windows Media Player. If the menu bar isn't showing, press ctrl+m to display it. Click "Tools" and click "Options.'' Open the "Performance" tab. Try checking the box next to the "Drop frames to keep audio and video synchronized". Click "Apply" and click "OK." Exit Windows Media Player. Now try playing the video again and see if that helped.

Thanks Bob, I have tried that, it did unfortunately not help. :( It plays every clip fine for about 6 min. before it slows down. Also when I try to move the progress bar of the player to a different position it freezes completely and won't play at all anymore.

Gerlinde this is just a shot in the dark. A while ago I couldn't get an AVI clip from my HV40 to play in WMP.
It would play in Splash lite though.
After noodling around I found out that an update I got for my video card was the problem.
I uninstalled update and everything was fine.
Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard, thank you for your suggestion. I have been thinking about a video card driver problem too, but my drivers are up to date and the problem persists on 2 different computer. Although the cards are both NVIDIA but different models.

Gerlinde,

I have some MPEG-4 AVC files that will freeze after playing for awhile even though the Windows Media Player progress indicator still shows progress. I disabled all my audio playback devices and played them again. This time when playback got to the point where it froze before, now it really quits playing altogether even though there was more video to play.

I have updated my AMD drivers, but that didn't make any difference. Now I am going to find Realtec audio drivers for my computer and do an update.

This may all be due to a bug in Windows Media Player 12.

I'm coming to the same conclusion. The odd thing is that some of my clips play just fine, no matter how long they are. But the clips that slow down will play fine in other media players, like the player in PRE11 Organizer or on my Win 7 machine. I think I give up on trying to fix that, maybe one day the Win8 media player will catch up with the Win7 media player. :gl:

It's not really that big of a problem as long as there are alternatives. Let me know if you had any luck with the Realtec driver. I need to update mine probably too, but I can't figure out which one I need. ASRock has not posted anything new last time I checked, and Realtec has so many. :-k

I haven't run into that problem, but I've encountered stalls in Windows Media Player from time to time that resulted in hangs or crashes. I'm currently using the free VLC player for everything but .wmv files and it works very well. One interesting thing about that player is that it doesn't use external codecs -- the codecs are built-in.
