Prodad Mercalli Standalone 3.0

Postby RJ Johnston » Thu Apr 18, 2013 2:47 am

Mercalli Standalone 3.0 is available now. The upgrade from Mercalli 2.1 SAL cost me US $36.75. I entered the coupon code of NAB2013 and the cost went from $40.00 to $36.75. http://www.prodad.com/home/products/vid ... ,l-us.html

The main features for me are the addition of batch processing and export to high quality MP4 with AVC. High quality is 40 Mbps bitrate. The only two other choices for export are low and medium quality. I hardly used the 2.1 SAL version because it didn't have batch processing.

I get about a 22 percent faster analysis in 3.0 over 2.1.

My Kodak Zi10 Playtouch videos won't export unless I move the out-trimmer to about 1 second from the end. The audio and video don't end at the same time, and I think that is the problem.

I reported a problem to Prodad about an encoding error I was getting with every single video from my Kodak Zi10 Playtouch pocket camera. Two days later they have it fixed.

The stabilization is excellent. You don't even need to make adjustments, Mercalli SAL 3.0 automatically determines the profile settings after it has finished the analysis. You can still make manual adjustments as in the 2.1 version. Since the Kodak Playtouch uses CMOS, I need to select "Rolling Shutter Compensation" option before adding videos to Mercalli.

The exported h.264 video in high quality mode has a bitrate that is too much for Corel VideoStudio to decode properly. There are lots of black blobs and smears that show up during playback, and which also show up on exported video from VideoStudio. There is no problem with the medium quality render, which is almost indistinguishable from the high quality render.

I noticed that their requirements for that version requires 8 gig memory.

Prodad recommends 8 GB of memory, but requires only 2 GB. Also they require a minimum of Windows Vista. To think that five months ago I had Windows XP and wouldn't be able to upgrade.

Another update is available, 3.0.215. This one fixes the rotate CW and rotate CCW buttons, which did not trigger the functions to actually rotate the video. Prodad fixed this within 48 hours after I reported it. Unfortunately they don't notify other users that updates are available.

RJ, how would this compare to using AE. I am trying to fix some footage in AE but AE has a bit of a learning curve

I just downloaded the trial of AE CS6 and ran a couple of clips through the Warp Stabilizer. It takes too long to analyze and stabilize and render compared to Mercalli SAL 3.0. It makes experimenting tedious. You still need to know what the controls are for if you want to get the best stabilization, although with Mercalli the main controls are set automatically after the analysis is finished. I read that in AE to just keep the stabilization method set to warp, so I did but that made the video even more warped with a couple of clips I tried, but did a miraculous job on a couple others.
